Rocca praises Tarrant's work rate
By Daniel Oakes
April 06 2003
Collingwood spearhead Anthony Rocca said yesterday that teammate Chris Tarrant's wayward kicking was more a result of poor concentration than the conditions at the MCG on Friday night.
Tarrant generally impressed in the Magpies' 16-point victory over Carlton, booting three goals, but his poor kicking at goal let him down at times.
Rocca said Tarrant was a naturally unpredictable player, and rated his high work rate on Friday as more significant than his poor goalkicking.
"I don't think the . . . opening in the MCG (was) a problem, I think it was a mental thing," Rocca said.
"He was just a bit off guard yesterday and he's the sort of bloke who could come out the next week and kick five straight. The good thing is he was getting the ball; he got the ball 20 odd times and took 11 marks. It was pleasing in one sense, but missing those goals was disappointing."
Speaking at the Magpies' recovery session at Victoria Park, Rocca also agreed with coach Mick Malthouse's assessment that Collingwood's performance was one of its worst in recent times.
He said Collingwood was out-muscled by the Blues, who were a better team than many believed.
"Carlton pride themselves on being hard at it in close, and hopefully we can match that sort of standard," he said.
"The fact is, Carlton were pretty good. They showed us the way at stoppages, how to get in and under and get first hands on it. Once they get the ball rolling, they're a pretty good team, and I don't think they'll surprise anyone, I think they'll beat them of their own accord."
Collingwood's injury worries were laid to rest yesterday, with the confirmation that Jarrod Molloy suffered nothing more serious than cramp on Friday night and Jason Cloke took part in the recovery session seemingly untroubled by his twisted ankle.
Carlton's Corey McKernan will be scanned for what the club doctor believes is a jarred knee.
