Hotpies,

During the 80's they change one line in the song -

"Oh the Premierships a cakewalk"
was changes to
"There is just one team we favour"

It was changed back after 1990. I even heard there was a call from someone in the media last week to change it back to There is just one team we favour, but Eddie said there will be no changes at all.

Yeah that version goes 'There is just one team we favour...'. I think it was just a type of experiement from Mike Brady in about 1982 but never took off.

thanks Dillo and Miss Magpie for that,
Does anyone know where exactly Good Old Collingwood Forever came from the exact origins also...
Does anyone have any rough idea when they were creating the Collingwood Symbol you know the Magpie with the black & white flag and aussie flag, where there any rough copies different ways or anything...
p.s hopefully this does not stay at the top of the general discussion for long.

This is an extract from the book 'Kill for Collingwood':

"The South African conflict provied the backdrop for the Collingwood football song. Tom Nelson, a young player recruited from Williamstown, supplied the words in 1906 to the tune of 'Goodbye Dolly Gray', a Boer War marching song. The penultimate line was officially altered in 1983 because of its obvious embarassing untruth for a quarter of a century, but loyal Collingwood supporters refuse to accept any tampering with this part of their heritage and prefer to sing the orginal version."

I hope this helps!

I actually have Goodbye Dolly Gray on mp3 or wav or something. Goes something like this

Goodbye Dolly I must leave you,
though it breaks my heart to go,
Something tells me I am needed
At the front to fight our foe.
See, the soldier boys are marching,
and I can no longer stay,
Hark! I hear the bugle calling,
Goodbye Dolly Gray.

Dont get me started.... that song or version was bought in by the ranald macdonald regime who believed that modern day collingwood failure was due to its obsession with traditon, its a horrible version i hated it and i was quite sad for a long time when the original version of good old collingwood for ever got the arse it was sung by no other than mike brady.

The original 'dolly gray' version of good old collingwood is collingwood if you know what i mean and no matter how many times i hear it, it always sends a shiver down my spine.

The so called "New Magpies" changed our emblem and song in 1983, but that didn't last, the only good thing to come out of the Ranald MacDonald era was David Cloke! We now have Jason and Cam! Laughing

I've mentioned this ages ago, but it seems relevant here.

During the late '80s early '90s, there was a second verse of our song sung before home games at Victoria Park. Do people remember:

...and ther'es just one team we'd rather see winning,
and there's no team that likes winning more,
when it's all said and done,
and the premiership's won,
it's Collingwood, for everyone.

(or something like that).

Just thinking about that verse brings back good memories because it always reminds me of standing in the outer at Vic Park with my dad. I really miss going to Vic Park. The atmosphere, the abusive supporters - brilliant.

About 12 months ago,Mike downloaded two copies of the PIES song, one from the early 1900 and then the lastest,of which I have both of them on file.
If any one wants to copy them, send me an email and I shall download them and send them, otherwise I am sure that Mike will be able to find the page concerned and put them back on the BB.
