More tickets for tomorrow's blockbuster game

April 02 2003

An extra 1,800 seats will be made available to the public for tomorrow night's AFL blockbuster between Carlton and Collingwood at the MCG.

Redevelopment work which has reduced the MCG's capacity caused fans to be turned away from last Friday night's Richmond-Collingwood game while thousands of seats were left vacant in both the AFL and Melbourne Cricket Club members' reserves.

But a meeting between the AFL and the MCC has prompted the MCC to give up a further 1,800 seats in its members' reserve for tomorrow night's game, which is expected to be a sellout.

AFL football operations general manager Andrew Demetriou said the AFL and the MCC would also further reduce the size of their members' reserves, making more seats available for the public who wished to buy tickets in advance.

The AFL and MCC reserves had been reduced by 24 percent on last season's figures during the work on the new Western Stand and can accommodate around 15,000 members each.

MCC general manager Stephen Gough said the club remained confident of filling the reserve without diminishing the chance for members to attend the match.

"Our historical attendance data leads us to believe we can comfortably cater for our members and their guests on Friday night," Gough said.

"This decision reflects our dual responsibility as ground manager of the MCG to maximise the capacity where possible without compromising our ability to accommodate the club's members and their guests."
