When I feel like a day off I contact my office and say, "It's my eyes". The response is, "Your eyes"? I reply with, "Yes, I can't see myself working today".

Several places I worked over the last few years had soft guidleines in place around sending emails after hours, particularly for managers. The concept was, if you're sending an email after hours you're putting pressure on that person to respond after hours which basically isn't cool.

Some I saw would use a signature that ackowledged they had sent the email after hours but specifically stated they did not want any responses till office hours, others would just write the email at some ridiculous hour but schedule it to be sent at 8am.

It's funny how work can consume people. A Manager I worked with 20 years ago could not go to bed until he'd checked his email. He just wouldn't sleep. Go out for dinner with the wife, get home late after a few wines but he just had to check them.

Another bloke was so conditioned to reading documents while eating lunch, he struggled going out to eat with family because he didn't have something to read while eating and was instead expected to communicate with the people around him.

Work fcks with people.

but its an email, not a phone call! i do it all the time, often at 11pm! usually because ive been putting work off and think "**** bedtime, just send the email!!"

Yeah, but you're running your own business, not a middle or snr manager in a compny with people reporting to you. When the boss sends you an email after hours, intended or not, it puts pressure on you to respond ASAP.

^^The expectation by many people that you take calls, and answer emails after hours is out of control. I refuse to.

I used to be one of the dummies who did.

The past 15 years or so of work, I could access the work web outlook on my home PC so while I was watching TV and farting around on the PC, I'd see if a work email came in. Couple of seconds to quickly read, couple more seconds to think how much have I had to drink before I respond, often it would be a 5 second response which is 1 less thing I had to do tomorrow.

Go back closer to 20 years ago when I supported call centres in Perth, the dumb fcks would frequently call me with queries just before knock off time their time, which was 7 or 8pm our time. I'd take the call but remind them of the time difference. They'd always apologise but kept forgetting.

Still, no demand for me to come into the office as my work gets done. Well, my week so far has been a Skype meeting after Skype meeting. Yes, Defence still uses Skype on the Defence Network of which we have to log in via a portal called DREAMS (Defence Remote Electronic Access Mobility Services) and use my DCAC (Defence Common Access Card) with my Smart Card reader that pushes the user behind a Firewall.

I have been asked if I am coming in for the various Christmas catch-ups. My response is, "Do I have to Pay". I get a "Yes". My reply is, "I am 60, worked since I was 14 and never paid for a Christmas Catch-up/function, I ain't starting now". Now I get one from the ADF, one from the Public Service and one from the Major Service Provider and I just don't go because. They give you three hours but you have to make up that time. Yes, I am serious. The only thing I am attending is the Officers Mess of which I am a member as it's cheap drinks, and free food and I have like a 10-minute walk to Flinders Street. Now that I have to physically head into the Office for so WFH that day is out.

If they try to force you threaten to have them charged with paid slavery.

^^They don't force us, they understand as we rarely take days off. I have never had to produce a Doctors certificate.

LOL,

While working from home is here to stay, what really annoys me is this push to go to a 4 day working week on the same money.

If you want to do a 4 day week, do what I did and take the 20% pay cut or work extra hours on the 4 days to make it up to full time

Lucky to be able to work from home, when most workers are forced to expose themselves to COVID every day.
No criticism of you.
Just pointing out how criminal it is that millions are being compelled to expose themselves to a pathogenic virus because governments dictate that profits are far more important than the health of the population.
