Nice club gambled twice and appears to have lost on both players
Beams issues were well known had been in media for years

After 2018 GF the club was happy to let Langdon walk if we could have got a 2nd round pick but there were no taker why ? His chronic knee simple
Club gave him a contract 2 years with the third being a club option on a very small base (close to league minimum I understand) with the majority of the money he could make was if he actually played games
That was the safety net the club put in place in case this happened
I hate seeing any player struck down and career ended by injury but that’s the game they play and some players bodies just can’t handle it
The club will move on from both players fairly quickly I believe once a settlement can be reached and approved by the league

Why are you so sure it was handled badly. All you can go by is medical advice and a players communication. You have to assume that at some point they are ready to continue. Having hindsight is not the same as having insight.

Two comments on Langdon—one from Buckley and one from Tom himself

Quote Nathan “ He’s been out on the track-he’s done some runs over the last couple of weeks but it’s been problematic whenever we step up”

Quote Tom “You play in a Grand Final then eight games later the surgeon puts it to you that you might not play again “

Depressing

Absolutely, although every Collingwood draft is done with the benefit of Hinesight...

And incidentally at the conclusion of this season, we will be able to look back and literally say hindsight is 2020...

It is Baz
As I understand it every time he has tried some weight bearing light jogging his knee blows straight up and takes days to slowly go down
I reported last year Langdon had been told exactly that he mightn’t play footy again his knee was that bad
He’s had a chronic knee condition for years and had been managed for years and nothing they’ve done or tried has made any difference to his condition
It’s a shame any player losses their career over injury but unfortunately in games like the one he plays it’s a far to often occurrence
I’m praying Scharenberg and his knees don’t head down the same track

I'm sad that it seems we'll be losing Langdon and Beams to retirement before the season even starts.

Hopefully IQ can stand up and come in for Langdon.

Lot's of questions will be raised. One being list spots available. I believe we've reserved one for Dunn. If Beams and Langdon go, does that open up two more spots we can use in the mid-season draft?

The other questions will revolve around the clubs salary cap. Will this ease our cap pressure? Or will they still be on our books after retirement? How does that all work? There must be something good to come out of all this, and freeing up money to re-sign Moore and JDG would be it.

And then they'll be the questions raised about trading Beams back in and not working with Fremantle, re:Langdon, in the same trade period, just weeks after losing the flag.

Just think Langdon could have been a few minutes from being a Norm Smith Medallist.

But instead cost us the 2018 premiership by not rushing a point in the 1st Q and Rioli taps it in for a goal. Fails to spoil Ryan and then stays down and lets Ryan kick to Sheed. What a game!

I'll see your Beams and Langdon retirement and raise you a Ben Reid, didn't he get injured too? He might only play 4 games this season instead of 5.

Lots of ifs, buts and maybes in life.

If we had got a half reasonable pick from Free or Sydney for Langdon at the end of 2018, we could have picked up a fit Marty Hore or Tom Jok...

If we had not picked up Beams, we may have been in a stronger position in the 2019 draft and picked up a Sam De Koning type.

Either way, there should be some salary cap respite and the chance to examine a mid-season draft bargain (I'm not sure we need Lynden Dunn despite his enormous impact on the morale of the group

And saved us how many times in the same match?
And set up how many links forward?

Goodness me.
