Post subject: Jack Niall- Pies firesale great in hindsight now.! | |
|
Jack Niall, a very respected footy journalist of many, many yrs, made some very interesting points on radio yesterday. He said, in hindisight, our firesale clearance of players, stars, two yrs ago, was best thing we could have done and has worked wonders for us, now. Short term pain , huge long term gain. Must admit, I was very worried, concerned back then, as we off loaded several stars. BUT, as he points out, Treloar is now injury prone, hes out yet again. Stephenson is a shadow of the player he was, got one goal last week, Clarko wont waste time with him, and Phillips, got delisted by the Hawks. And, Grundy is injury prone, looks cooked at times, and shat the nest when Gawn went off. Niall reckons we righted our salary cap, plus those delistings led, eventually, too some great kids, plus Mitchell, Bobby Hill, McStay, Frampton. I find it hard to disagree with him. I do recall the absolute pile on our list manager got back then, was his name Overland ?, he copped so much flak. Maybe, just maybe we owe him, and in some ways, Bucks, an apology now. ?

The firesale turned out to be a blessing in disguise, with a sorted cap and fresh talent. No need to apologize to Bucks, as it's Fly's coaching that's truly revitalized the team. Loving the exhilarating footy we're playing now, just like in 2011! π #GoPies |

Cameron in 2 games so far this year is better than Brody on pretty much every metric, at less than half the price.
The other trades out, as per the OP, none have shown much. We should never have let our cap get that bad in the first place, but yeah, the firesales have had positive results. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

Jake Niall is a staunch Pies supporter and very highly respected within the industry. Heβs always on the look out for a positive Collingwood story while others look to pour on the hate. |

Hindsight is a wonderful thing.
My takeaway from the salary cap issue and how we have travelled since is that it speaks volumes for how incompetent our previous list management was compared to how good it has been since.
Graham Wright inherited a mess and turned it into gold. If we reach the holy grail in the coming years, he should be praised as much as Mccrae. _________________ "You must be a parking ticket, cuz you got fine written all over you" Glen Quagmire |

Clearly the "fire sale" has proved a master stroke. Nevertheless, I was, and still remain, critical of the way Treloar was shown the door. Elite sport can be a cruel 'industry', but a bit more care and class could have been applied in trading Treloar. The way we traded out Grundy is an exemplar on how it should be done.
Anyway, its all water under the bridge now. Our future looks bright. |

Spot on.
The previous football operations department from about 2012 until Geoff Walsh got booted in 2020 decisions on recruiting and player salaries was totally incompetent and down right negligent. Collingwood should have never been in that salary cap mess to start with. |
