We have not added anyone else in the rookie draft and only re-rookied Murley as expected.

Our list profile is so much more balanced than 2022.
You can wax lyrical about the abilities of the ins vs the abilities of the outs but the age, depth, experience and leadership of the 2023 group is now much more aligned to a club that’s in a premiership window.

I feel the list is much better balanced. More skilled, and faster.

In the past with Magden and the Browns et al, being given multiple opportunities, it felt that we were just using them to plug holes in a wonky ship which could sink at any moment.

In 2022, mainly sans these types, and playing to overwhelm, it was a spirited effort to get into the 8 and perform as we did, it was part great effort and an amazing string of close wins.

End of season and in this draft, seems we are customizing a speed boat.

Apart from Grundy, (and Roughead) we let go players who were fringe or depth players and replaced them with experience and some new kids.

It's a plus from me.

It's a plus from me too.

I like our depth more, there will be genuine competition for places in more spots.

As much as I wanted them to succeed, Brown bro's and Magden(who I did like) aren't long term solutions, Hill, McStay, Mitchell, Frampton(hopefully) bring a better AFL skills. Was sad to lose Roughie though.

This will lead to more growth in the group, especially the younger players as they will have to work really hard to get in the team.

Allan looks to be a steal, good pedigree, him and Nick could terrify the league for the next 10yrs.

The position I'm worried about most is a genuine full back.

Really looking forward to next year!

Good observations in this thread. We know have very skilled people in all key football roles who are making excellent decisions and the result is that we have a better squad. I am very happy with how the club is going - so much less ego and much more togetherness and fun

The aim is to get stronger each year because the competition gets stronger each year and we’ve achieved that despite the loss of Grundy and Henry. McRae is of the Matthews school of using ruckmen who are strong at the contest while Grundy was essentially a touch ruckman who roved the ball rather than used his body at the contests. Henry is a freakish mark and multiple goal kicker but what what’s the point when you refuse to defend when you don’t have the ball.

McStay and Frampton are strong at the contest and add marking ability around the ground while Bobby Hill adds zip around the forward line. Tom Mitchell instantly improves us at the contests in the middle of the ground.

The national draft is a lottery for 18-19 year olds. I would have preferred some key position players and a ruckman. I think we’re expecting too much from Begg. If he doesn’t come one and we lose Cameron and Cox to injuries it forces us to use Frampton and McStay in ruckmen roles. Who then plays key position? We need Will Kelly and Charlie Dean to stand up and start playing good footy.

Richards looks like a good player to me but I’m wondering what is the point of having a 23 year old rolling around in the VFL if he can’t displace Bobby Hill or John Noble in the senior side. Or for that matter why did we recruit Bobby Hill if Richards is going to be that crumbing small forward in the forward line.

Despite a few reservations I think we’ve done well in our recruitment in the off season. It’s now up to McRae to turn Allan and Ryan into AFL footballers and for the fitness staff to keep everyone out on the track. If we achieve that we’ll have a very good 2023 season.

Was Tom Wilson on the senior list? Or was he always on the rookie list? I know now he's a Cat-B Rookie, but was wondering which list he was moved from.

Just trying to work it all out; (Since the beginning of 2022)

9 players have come off the senior; Grundy, T. Brown, Henry, C. Brown, Poulter, McMahon, Madgen, Murley, and Roughead.

2 Rookies came off the list; Chugg and Ginnivan.

1 Cat B Rookie came off the list; Keane.

8 players have gone onto the senior list; Hill, McStay, Frampton, Mitchell, Allan, Ryan, Richards, and Ginnivan.

2 players have gone onto the Rookie List; Murley, and Carmichael.

1 player, Tom Wilson, goes from Cat A to Cat B rookie.

After all that, I think we have one less player on our list than from this time last year. Presumably for a SSP invitation, or for use in the next MSD in June.

and hopefully raise the skillset bar at the club.

Be good to see a few more players staying back practicing on their non preferred.

Think the same thing one player to come in plus an additional pick next year (second round)
