Still amazed at the heart-stopping, heart-warming win against Carlton.

Wondered how Silvagni missed, and by so much.
I had another look, and it all made sense.

The Pies are currently top of the ladder for game-changing tackles.
In the week before, against Freo, it was the well-named Noble.

In this game, Taylor Adams set the tone
with his opening quarter tackle on Cripps,
and saved the game at the end,
with the help of another spectacular and courageous leap from Howe.

The take-away message: (in the form of 5, 7, 5 syllable Haiku)

Forget Jezza’s mark
and his concussion-laden
knee to Jerker’s head.

This is the image
to adorn the dens (and hearts)
of True Believers.

It would be nice if we could get the ball out of the centre more often,
and not have to rely on chasing so hard and for so long.

In the meantime, hopefully, this photo will be front-and-centre
on the Magpies’ run-through banners for a few years
– to inspire our next heroic efforts.

yes, a marvellous victory, against a red hot team. But i was impressed by the swans tonight too, they showed the Deeeeees, now two losses in a row, are defintelty very beatable, and we play them in two weeks, so we are most certainly up for that challenge, our young team will thrive on it, actually.

Who's that attempting to smother in the photo above – Jeremy Howe? Perhaps it's just the angle, but it looks like he didn't miss by much!

Great post - well done. Even after watching the replay a couple times its hard to see that level of detail.

It looks like the much maligned Taylor Adams making a successful attempt to apply enough pressure to cause Silvagni to spray his kick for goal.

As SteveG says..... a game saving act.

Yes, David; as mentioned, it was Jeremy Howe.

Yes, piffdog, it's hard to see, but it's worth looking hard at it.

If you look at the video replay frame-by-frame (and why wouldn't you, for one of the greatest moments in football history) you can see that Howe (on the right) used his famous spring to leap from the next suburb, to get as close as he did.

His presence was a real factor. But it was the tag-team effort with Taylor Adams (on the left) that made all the difference. Taylor also lept from a long way away, and grabbed both the arm and the leg of Silvagni.

The point of my poem was to suggest that Jezza's mark was a walk in the park, compared to the sheer effort, skill, and determination of Our Jezza and his mate Tay.
Real heroes.

"Jezza" Howe's mere outstretched presence cut off the angle to goal for Silvagni, which caused him to slice his kick to the 'right'. Not to mention Tay's influence in that moment!

Ahhhhhmazing will and commitment amongst all of these guys.

We have Fly and his posse to thank for that!!

Agreed.

Big stage; big crowd; big tackle count; big scalp.

Very little backward or sideways slow movement.
Playing almost four quarter.

At last, some reward for effort.
The boys are remembering what it takes (and feels like) to be competitive.

Agree, it really was a defining moment, or maybe the moment that really shows what this team is capable of, and the guts and effort the team is showing. Love it, great post

I Love the way Adams attacks the game, but goodness me, he is a dead set clanger king with the ball.

His disposal efficiency is deplorable, he ranks 560th in the AFL this season at 60.4%, his kicking efficiency of 40.3% see's him ranked at 594th in the league with just 52 (from 129) effective kicks this season.
He ranks number 4 in the competition for clangers.

How can a bloke, that's played almost 200 games, not even be a 50/50 chance to hit a target with a kick?
His kicking efficiency today was 30%, ranking 274th in the round... only 276 players took the ground in round 12. How people had him in their votes today is mind boggling.

Calls for him to be our next captain are ludicrous.

i disagree with this. He is excellent at hitting up a forward target (and rarely makes the heinous clangor (no pressure missing a target leading to a turnover). I don't think there would be many playing his role with a high efficiency rating.

Lots of interesting stats here, but the picture in the OP still shows that those with great(er) “efficiency” stats were not near enough the ball to be efficient. It was Adams that applied the efficient tackle, and (with the diving help of Howe) saved the game.

Raw statistics not only don’t tell you where and when things happen, they do not have a loading for the importance of timing and location.
Simply put, most statistics are based on quantity and not on quality.

Of course, what one statistician might mark down as a ‘clanger’ is what others (such as Greg Baum in The Age, 5 June 2002) refer to as McChaos footy. Teams like Richmond developed this as a way of counteracting defences spring-boarding off easy interceptions that lead to turnovers. Collingwood have been using it whilst the rain has been tumbling down as way of gaining territory, and then parking the bus a kick behind the play, to generate multiple forward entries. Of course, it would be nice to deliver a lace-out pass to a leading forward, but we only have one Pendlebury, and one Mihocek.

Against Carlton, the Pies got the 4 points by holding on, and winning by 4 points. Two heroes combined in tag-team fashion to thwart the foe.

Against Hawthorn, same, same. (Almost.)
With the Pies 4 points up, and with 26 seconds to go, Brody Mihocek puts his body on the line, gets a head-high tackle, is jumped upon, and the closest umpire puts his whistle away.
Luke Breust gains possession and is looking to kick the winning goal in his 250th game. But guess who turns up, springs into action, and launches himself to thrust out his left arm?
Same part of the ground; same timing; same Superhero as in the episode last week: Taylor Adams.
His diverting arm causes Luke Breust to take a side step.
This allows Beau McCreery (The Tackling Machine) to swoop in, and pin one arm.
In Wrestling there is probably a name for this decisive finishing move.
For the Pies, it could be called The Game Saver.

In true tag-team wrestling fashion, Adams joins in and tackles Breust, and whilst McCreery sticks the tackle (as he often does) Adams spreads his Magpie wings to remind the Ump that this is “Baaaallll”.

Check out the other Usual Suspects in the frame.
Crisp ready for a spillage that would put him on his trusty left foot;
Maynard facing him, in case the ball dropped to the other side,
and sweeper Pendlebury ready for anything and everything, like the Field Marshall he has been.
It’s as if this was a scripted training drill.

But however you want to slice it, it’s another timely and heroic game-saving effort.
