Now now Piesnchess, you will be flamed by the Nicksters who saw nothing wrong with the umpiring and agree with Dillon the Villain šŸ˜‚ Move along nothing to see here and stop being so disrespectful to the umpires šŸ˜—

Umpires deserve a blast. There wasnā€™t an umpire within a mile of De Goey who was in the F50 with one Saint and no one elseā€¦ field ump had to run 50 metres just to call holding the ball against De Goey. Watch the replay, umpires continually out of position and too far from the ball.

Seems to have been an issue with boundary umpires of late too. I thought the idea of having two on each side of the ground was supposed to fix that, so not sure why this should be the case.

Boundary ones are tricky. Unless you are in a perfect position, it can be tough to gauge whether the ball is full in or out.

We see it a lot with goal reviews - has the ball fully crossed the line or not.

The issue with the goal was why didn't it get picked up as a goal review?

Communication issue? Too often the ump further away runs in to make a call. The Higgins goal everyone expected the other to make the out of bounds call and no one did. Boundary umps is an odd one, they should be easier to coordinate. Might just be a case of too many cooks in the kitchen

Perhaps! I certainly sympathise as I was a boundary umpire as a not particularly speedy 13/14-year-old and back then had to do an entire side of the ground myself (obviously the standard of play in the league I was umpiring was nowhere near AFL, but the ball could still move pretty fast and I'd have to catch up). So I totally get it, and if anything you'd think stuff like this would have been much more of a problem in the past ā€“ but I really don't remember such obvious calls of the kind that seem to be happening weekly at the moment being missed 2+ years ago.

Losing a lot of experience with Razor Ray and the like coincided with AFL mismanagement of umpiring and constant rule changes. Thatā€™s my guess.

I'll bite.
I thought the umpiring was almost as bad as the gameplay from both sides, De Goey was absolutely scragged all night, if that had happened to Neil he would of got 15 free kicks.
Some arm chopping on both sides just went uncalled, thought it was back in the 1980's the way they put the whistle away in the forward 50.
Holding the ball; well its a bloody lottery these days isn't it? The amount of times the ball was pinned in, and the player had no prior...astounding.

So yeah, I thought a shocking performance by the umpires

^ Yes, you go up North and they umpire it like it's the NRL. At times last night, I was looking for Cam Munster to break the shackles - then I remembered he's still injured, THEN I remembered he doesn't play what now passes for AFL.

Watching Bombers Saints. Good game and bombers may well win. But the main difference will be the umpires compared with last week - saints not getting every single decision their way and hence are struggling a tad.

Another boundary umpire howler at the Port game. I know they are going to implement chip technology but boundary umpires making sure their job is redundant

Interesting to see who the umpires hate more us or Ginni.
Image the stands erupting if Ginni gets a high free this week!
