Yeah ok. Names like McGovern, H Himmelberg and Ben McKay stand out for our key position needs but neither will come cheap. Let’s not trade 2 first rounders out ever again!

Given our backline woes, with an ageing Roughie and Howe and Pendles needing to go back, we need to do whet Melbourne did and go hard for a Steve May type. Look how it turned out for them. But after tanking for years they had the draft picks and spare cash to get him. Not sure we do for a KP backman of his quality

Harry Himmelberg is a perfect fit if you ask me.

https://afltables.com/afl/stats/players/H/Harry_Himmelberg.html

194cm KEY FORWARD. Just turned 26 last week. Can mark, can kick straight and is a very good set shot.

Younger brother Elliott's stats fwiw: https://afltables.com/afl/stats/players/E/Elliott_Himmelberg.html

If they were both gettable, then they should be our main targets. Imagine getting both Himmelberg's, that's our tall forwards sorted.

Ben McKay is another that would fit almost perfectly.

https://afltables.com/afl/stats/players/B/Ben_McKay.html

201cm KEY DEFENDER. Turns 25 in December. Is a very good intercept mark, is good 1 on 1, has a clean disposal efficiency.

Has had a few injury setbacks along the way, but would be a fantastic player to bring into our back six. Just remember if you're looking at those stats, he is a key defender.

Jacob Hopper would also be a good target as a midfielder.

https://afltables.com/afl/stats/players/J/Jacob_Hopper.html

187cm INSIDE MID. Turns 26 in February next year. Is a clearance expert, gets a tonne of the pill, is a contested ball winner, has good disposal skills.

Is currently nursing a knee injury sustained in round 1 and will miss another month of footy. Is underrated.

Those are the players I want and those are the players we should be targeting. Sadly, all need a trade unless we wait another year for free agency.

Technically Collingwood is north of Richmond, so we’re a chance for Dusty. 😂

And what price would that be IYO? Just interested to know.

Truth be known we are 5 positional players away from true sustained success:

* Power key Defender Griffin Logue? Ben McKay?
* Crumbing forward (Ginnivan not quite that) Bobby Hill?
* Inside bull midfielder Paddy Dow? Jacob Hopper?
* Power Forward Harry Himmelberg?
* Adaptable Ruck/Forward Rowan Marshall? Elliott Himmelberg?

Work to be done.

If we forget about free agency this year (McStay, Amon, Brayshaw, etc), then we will need to trade.

Questions are:

-Does Poulter really want to return to SA? And is Grundy someone we should actually look at trading?
-Who out of the following uncontracted players do we bring back next year; Isaac Chugg, Mason Cox, Jamie Elliott, Jordan Roughead and of course Jordan De Goey.
-Do we now have the cap space to make significant moves?
-Who of all the players named do we really want?

Looking at last years trades (I may have done the maths wrong) we have picks in the third round linked to Hawthorn, Richmond, Bulldogs and two fourth round picks linked to Adelaide/GWS? However, our original 2nd, 3rd and 4th round picks have gone to the Suns.

So we dont have a 2nd rounder? But have three 3rd rounders and two 4th rounders. And of course still have our first rounder, which will become a big talking point once we know what number it will be (Top 10?).

Good post Presti. Graham Wright took a dud poker hand (so to speak) and turned it into a full house. He has more to work with this year. I think we:

* shall finish bottom 7 and have a high 1st rounder. CANNOT TRADE IT

* Package up some of our 3rd rounders and get in early with the Lions who shall be father son selecting Will Ashcroft. Wright did a similar deal last trade period with Gold Coast on the first day. Maybe a parcelling up can get us a pick in the low 20's.

* IF and I say IF DeGoey doesn't accept our potential offer, one could assume that a first rounder and steak knives would be secured especially if we matched the bid and forced a fairer trade.

We need elite talent and have yet to secure enough as the list stands.

Correct Presti.
We have the three third rounders you mentioned.
We have also traded on our future 2nd, 3rd and 4th round selections ( so no second round at all currently ) Not sure about the fourth rounders but I imagine you have that right too.

Note - If those three accumulated third rounders finish low enough ( Dogs and Hawks don’t make eight and Tigers don’t go far ) then mathematically there is an advantage to the Lions to swap their first round pick, AS LONG AS THEY FINISH HIGH ENOUGH ( play in G F )
If needed, it shouldn’t be difficult for us to throw in a sweetener and make those swap of picks happen. Having said that, we won’t be the only suitor for the Lions first rounder.

If De Goey doesnt accept our deal, we use one of our picks on a KPF, and the other on a Midfielder.

Then try to get Bobby Hill.

Our contending team could be something like:
B: Maynard, Dean/Kelly, Murphy
HB: Quaynor, Moore, Crisp
M: Macrae, Lip, J Daics
HF: Henry, Kreuger/Ash/McMahon, Ginnivan
F: McInnes, Pick 7, Hill
Foll: Grundy, Pick 8, Whisper
Int: Ruscoe/Noble/Bianco, Poulter, Cal/Tyler/Arlo/Future Pick, McCreery/Harrison/Murley/Wilson

Paddy Dow is an interesting one too

2022 Hypothetical Trades -
Straight swap, JDG to Richmond for Balta.
Trade our 2nd round pick to Melbourne for Tom McDonald.

Leaves us our first round draft pick for a key forward.

Secures our spine for the next 4 years -

FB : Balta / Dean
CHB : Moore / McMahon
CHF : Kreuger / Cameron
FF : McDonald / McStay

Gives us flexibility to see out the careers of Howe, Roughead & McDonald, while the next generation come through.
Look to pick up someone of the McStay ilk towards the end of 2023.

Respectfully, no thankyou.

We wont be competing until 2026 at the earliest imo.

De Goey for Balta swap: JDG for Balta is great, for us. No way are Richmond doing this deal.

2nd round pick for McDonald: ARE YOU CRAZY? Don't get me wrong, he is a very serviceable player, but we have missed the boat on this one. Could have gotten him 18 months ago, but we had the salary cap drama and didn't get any KPF's. Rather than giving up a valuable pick in the late 20's-early 30's for a 29 year old role player, lets use the pick on a player that may be in our next premiership 23.

First round pick for KPF: 100% agree if there is one available at our pick. I'm thinking we will finish 11-13 which means we get a pick around 7-9 (after Brisbane get Ashcroft from F/S). The draft order will change a lot from now until the date of the draft, but at this stage there isn't a KPF in that sort of range. If there isn't, I expect us to take the best available prospect to further our rebuild.

McStay FA: I understand what you and posters on here think about McStay, he is a good KPF, but imo the most he can be in a premiership side is the 2nd tall, similar to Mihocek now, and I feel we are already experimenting with players that could be that once Mihocek departs (Krueger, Ash, McMahon, even Kelly).

For me, a good offseason will see us getting a KPF in the first round, keeping JDG for around 700k per year over 4 years, getting a young Small Forward like Bobby Hill, and using our other picks to pick best available or filling desperate needs (Midfield depth, Small Forward)

^the drums beating on the exit of Dusty are getting louder. All of a sudden they have an ageing midfield - going into 2023, Cotchin will be 33 and Prestia 30. They have Jack Ross coming through but he's not yet in the class of the former.
Look, I don't think it'd happen, it's meant to stimulate discussion, but Balta is exactly the type of player we need, and now.
It then becomes a question of what do we have to take to the bargaining table to stimulate such a trade.

McDonald you need to look a bit deeper. What is clear is we need Top 10 quality KPD and KPF from the draft.
What happens when we get one or both? Do you trust the development of them alongside speculative hopes like Kreuger and Cameron in a master and apprentice role?
That's why we might need to use a higher pick than we like to secure the likes of a premiership player and swingman in McDonald to fill both a positional and experience void now.
Then we need to find a younger version, a McStay or similar.

Undoubtedly players like them won't be the key position match-winners that are part of our next multi-year finals push, but ones you need in the interim to allow the development of your youth. Certainly the 2nd or 3rd options.
Without them, you run the risk of end up in a leadership vacuum like North, Carlton and Melbourne exhibited over a decade.
