Vaughan slips from top spot in PwC ratings

Michael Vaughan has relinquished his title as the top-ranked batsman in Test cricket, following his failure during England's innings victory over Zimbabwe at Lord's.

Vaughan managed just eight runs in his only innings of the match, and Australia's Matthew Hayden has moved ahead of him by a single point, thanks to his century in the final Test against West Indies in Antigua last week.

Other Englishmen have made gains after the Lord's victory. Marcus Trescothick has moved up to 18th place after a fluent 59, while Mark Butcher, who scored a century and took five wickets, is 21st.

Shaun Pollock, who arrives in England in June to compete in a five-Test series for South Africa, remains at the top of the bowling stakes, ahead of Australia's Glenn McGrath.

Michael Vaughan's two failures against Zimbabwe have proven costly. He's dropped from first place to 4th.

Whereas he rocketed up the list with good performances against Australia, his two low scores against the 8th. ranked Test team dragged him down.

Lara takes top spot in PwC ratings

Brian Lara's amazing run-spree � 742 runs in his last five Tests � has ensured that he has overtaken Matthew Hayden as the best batsman in the world, according to the Pricewaterhouse Cooper's Test ratings. Lara scored 533 runs in the four-Test series against Australia, and then sealed the issue with 209 against Sri Lanka � his fifth Test century in seven Tests against them.

Lara's 22-point lead should ensure that he holds on to the top spot for a few more weeks, but Matthew Hayden, currently in second place, will have an opportunity to displace Lara when Australia take on minnows Bangladesh in a two-Test series next month. Michael Vaughan, who started the year at the top of the table, slips to fifth place.

Career-best ratings for Ntini and Smith

Makhaya Ntini has climbed four places to 6th in the PwC Ratings, after demolishing England at Lord's with match figures of 10 for 220, while his captain, Graeme Smith, has leapt seven places to 12th in the batting stakes. Smith, who has yet to qualify for a full rating because he is a relative newcomer to Test cricket, has every chance of breaking into the top ten before the end of the series, after picking up 621 runs in his first three innings alone.

It is the highest rating yet achieved by both Ntini and Smith, although not all the South Africans have been upwardly mobile this week. Shaun Pollock has slipped back to second spot in the bowling, after his mauling from Andrew Flintoff on the final day, although he is a single point behind the new leader, Muttiah Muralitharan.

Flintoff himself has jumped 18 places after his brutal 142 from 146 balls, although he is way down the list at No. 61. England, however, still have six batsmen in the top 30, including Michael Vaughan at No. 3, and Graham Thorpe � who may be back in the side by the time the third Test starts at Trent Bridge next week.

England's bowlers have all slipped in the ratings. The most significant mover is Darren Gough, who is now out of the top 20 and at his lowest rating for six years.

Pollock on top in PwC ratings

Shaun Pollock has regained the top spot in the PricewaterhouseCoopers ratings for bowlers, after returning figures of 8 for 104 in the third Test against England at Trent Bridge. Pollock swapped places with Muttiah Muralitharan, who is in second place, 25 points behind Pollock.

Michael Vaughan may have registered his first Test win as captain, but scores of 1 and 5 in the match meant that he slipped five places to No. 8 in the batting list. The two centurions for England, Nasser Hussain and Mark Butcher, both improved their rankings. Hussain advanced eight places to No. 20, while Butcher moved up three places to a career-best No. 17.

Mark Richardson has played 24 Tests for New Zealand since his debut in 2000. He has 2 centuries, a highest score of 143 and 16 half centuries with an average of 48.73

Andy Caddick hasn't retired, that I know of, but with Kirtley, Anderson, Johnson, Harmison and possibly Hoggard, Bicknell, Ali and Chapple all ahead of him (and younger), it's highly likely he's played his last Test.

His rating in the top ten is still inflated from his 5th. Test performance against the Aussies, in Sydney. Wickets against Australia are worth far more than against the lower teams.

PwC Ratings
Trescothick leapfrogs to ninth spot

Marcus Trescothick's double-century against South Africa at The Oval has propelled him nine places into ninth spot in the PwC ratings for batsmen. Inzamam-ul-Haq's matchwinning hundred against Bangladesh took him up three places to No. 5. There wasn't much to celebrate for Michael Vaughan, though, who slumped to 15th place after a disappointing series against South Africa. Graeme Smith fell back to No. 25 after managing a mere 93 from his last six innings.

The top three slots in the bowlers' list remained unchanged, but Shoaib Akhtar and Jacques Kallis both leapt four places after impressive performances in the recent Tests. Three of the South African bowlers who played the series figured in the top 15, while none from the England squad made it to the top 30. In fact, the top three England bowlers in the list were Andy Caddick (No. 10), Matthew Hoggard (No. 22) and Dominic Cork (No. 30). Among the bowlers who played for England this season, Steve Harmison was the highest ranked, at a modest No. 32.
