I wouldn't be the slightest bit surprised if you're right on that.

I've also seen a few articles comparing the situation in the Ukraine with Taiwan and suggesting Putin and Xi are swapping notes.

I alluded to that up thread. Putin visited Xi a few weeks ago. If China and Russia are determined to take the Ukraine and Taiwan it might be strategically smart for them to both invade at the same time. Who knows? Iran might jump in too.

In Oliver Stone's documentary The untold History of the United States, he said that when the Russians and the US were signing treaties around the end of the Cold War, the US agreed not to have millitary bases in countries that shared a border with Russia and later reneged on it. People who are across this stuff better than I am might be able to confirm the validity of that claim.

For those who want to know more about Ukraine, granted from a US perspective.

The layers of propaganda are astonishing. Impossible to decipher what's happening.

^Spot on.

I see the US are saying that Russia may stage some sort of attack, aka false flag, to justify invading the Ukraine. The sceptic in me thinks the US could be saying that so that when they attack first and the Russians retaliate they can say "The Russians are using a false flag to justify invading the Ukraine. Just as we predicted."

I think the thread title Potential conflict between Russia and Ukraine is a bit misleading. It should be more like potential Russian invasion of Ukraine.I don’t think the Ukrainians have done anything to provoke Russia(or more to the point,Putin)into invading their country.I don’t see what else they could have done to prevent this potential invasion.

Putin is definitely driving this, the Ukraine isn't to blame neither is the US.

People can speculate about the reasons but it's all about power in the end.

^Yep, it's a shakedown from a thug who knows sane people don't want war.

The question is what the response should be. David, any sense of the feeling in Ukraine now?

If the Russians are just carrying out millitary drills along the border, why is Putin engaging in de-escalation talks with other leaders? Shouldn't he just say "De-escalation from what? They're just millitary drills."

I was reflecting before, what is it about Europe that there always seems to be some form or another of border disputes? it's been happening for centuries.

Not really, to be honest – I feel like all the info I've been getting is as secondhand as it is for everyone else. I've discussed it a few times with Lola, but she understandably finds this situation extremely upsetting (her home city, Kharkov, is pretty much in the direct line of fire) and as a result hasn't been following it all that closely to my knowledge.

I don't think it's limited just to Europe. Very common in Asia and Africa too. I suspect it's just an unavoidable byproduct of the concept of borders itself – at some point, somebody's going to be unhappy about where the boundary of their control has been arbitrarily placed.

By "the West", are you referring to McGowanistan? If so, it sounds like all we'll need to do is turn up at the border and they'll run away screaming. Razz
