What a start to the day! 10 from the first over. 15 after two.
Caddick was rightly annoyed when he tempted the hook from Haydos only to see it fall over the fieldsman's head and inside the boundary.
As a cricket captain, I know one of the hardest things to do is place a fieldsman ON the boundary. They (esp. the young ones) seem to always want to be 5 or 10 metres inside the boundary. That's 'no-man's land' and when you're trying to set the batsman up for the top edged hook, you want your fine leg/deep backward square ON the boundary. Running in is always easier than back pedalling.
What a great atmosphere there always is at the G at the start of this Test. Australia three nil up and still the punters turn up in droves. Good on ya, Melbourne!!

Matthew Hayden becomes the first Aussie to rack up 6 Test tons in a calendar year. This was a typically adventurous Haydos innings. He could easily have been caught from the first ball he faced and again on 98 but good luck to him.
Congrats to Alfie as well. After a big Pura Cup ton last week he looks right back in form. Could be another biggy.
How must it be for England? You get rid of Hayden, and Ponting walks out! And who's at #6? Only a bloke with 451 runs against you already in only two innings!

Yep, apart from Matt the Bat, it's great to see Alfie and Tugga amongst the runs - specially the skip. Tomorrow could be anything.
What are the English thinking? Going into a Test against this batting lineup with that attack!! Although, with their injuries, Scotty Cummings would probably get a bowl if he was just a bit fitter. Lol.

Hey, wasn't it a great sight - seeing Steve Waugh walk out to bat. A packed MCG gave him a wonderful ovation. This man is a true champion.

A double ton for Alfie. Well Done! A great mix of aggression and patience.

I went to the game yesterday and I must say I usually love watching Australia bowl....that's probably coz there was Hughes and Reifell and Fleming and Warnie and hardly any Vics bat besides Deano and Herb, however, watching Hayden bat is an absolute delight. He's so strong and hits the ball so hard with such excellent technique and at times treat the bowling with contempt. It's a delight to watch.
Hayden really should think about playing for the Bushrangers.

Good to see MacGilla get 5. Had a huge work rate and deserved the wickets. Don't get me wrong he did bowl alot of bad balls but there were quite a few that were excellent and would have tested any batsman.
Interesting to see how McGrath and Gillespie pull up before the 5th test. They both seemed to be strugling today, and McGrath spent a long time off the field.

I went to the Boxing Day test and had a great time (better than last year's wash-out!). Got to see my gorgeous Matty pile on the runs with ease, as well as the wonderful Stevie for possibly the last time at the MCG (that's a bloody disgrace! He proved, yet again, that they should not even be considering forcing him to retire...)
Only problem was the sunburn...ah, the joys of being a redhead!

Isn't Test cricket intriguing?
Matthew Hayden is in line for Player of the Series and yet, if England had held the chances he gave, he may well be still under 100 runs!
Although Haydos has prospered playing the way he does, it was inexplicable that he went for that shot from the first ball today. Highly irresponsible in such a professional unit.
Unfortunately, Tugga undid any good he did for himself in his first innings 77. He only added 15 on the second day and then watched Love effortlessly score 62.
Today he was out three times and only scored 14!! Once from an edge that wasn't given (a strangely unenthusiastic appeal), and again when Hussain caught him from a no-ball and when Butcher caught him in the slips.
It really looks like Sydney will be his swansong. But at least he has this chance. A farewell that A.B. and Heals were denied.

Tugga needs atleast a ton in the Sydney test if he is going to go to the Windies. Todays efforts were disapointing. It would have been ideal for his chances had he come out after we had lost those first few and then steered us home making 30 or 40 not out. But getting out 3 time for 14 is just what the selectors were after.
It will be sad to see a champion go, but lets hope he comes to his senses and retires after the Sydney test. Even if he makes a big score wont it be a great way for a champion to go out.
Good Luck Steve!

Martin Love may have been effortless but he was dropped on 25.
Im quite happy to leave Love in the team. My question is why would Lehmann be an automatic selection ahead of Steve Waugh ?? What has Lehmann done to earn that ?

Agree JLC. But the selectors seem to have something against Waugh ever since last year when the rotation policy for the one-day matches didn't work. I don't know weather it was Waugh's idea for the rotation policy and because it didn't work they have the shits with him. I don't know what really happened but they have been against him ever since.
