If you don't know what Tiktok is, the answer is clearly No.

I downloaded the App a couple of years ago, never registered just looked at it, then deleted it. Apparently shitpiles of people are using it and it's a whole new set of "influencers"

So do you Tiktok?

If you do, why? what do you get from it? Do you just view content or upload content?

We’re all too old for it, lol. I also signed up for an account out of curiosity but felt like a granddad who just walked into an under-18s disco, never posted and never went back. It’s very much a "Gen Z" thing.

For those who don’t know, I guess the vibe is "Instagram, but for short videos". I recall there being a similar short-video platform a few years back called Vine, which was relatively popular but never on the same scale as TikTok. One big selling point is the ability to incorporate music, text and filters, so it’s a lot of stimulus in a brief period of time – which I guess is perfect if you have a short attention span.

What’s interesting to me is how different social media platforms have different demographics. Consider this forum, for instance – lots of teenagers were posting here when I joined in 2003, and now Jezza and I are in our early 30s and apparently the babies of the forum. Similarly, Facebook is less than two decades old, and most of us only discovered it 14–15 years ago – yet it’s now seen by today’s teenagers as an old person’s platform, basically something their parents or grandparents use. But it’s not like TikTok is the same thing but "cooler"; as far as I’m aware, you can’t really use it to share other stuff you found online or get into long discussions, and making a short video seems a lot more effort-intensive than just sharing a photo (I guess they still have Instagram for that). But it does make me wonder how someone like me – i.e. someone who likes writing massive posts and getting into debates – would use the internet if I were growing up now. I can’t imagine TikTok or Instagram would offer much to me, and I probably wouldn’t be signing up to Facebook if nobody I knew at school/uni/work was using it.

People eventually gravitate to whatever fills a need, but I do think that what’s available does shape the way we think and communicate. That’s my 2c, anyway. Mr. Green

Some of the guys at work live by it. Again, I just dont get it. Aren't these people embarrassed to be dancing and lip-syncing... oh but they're seen as hot so its ok.
