I've used the wrong words, but yes it's our equal highest gold medal tally.
You're right about the events skewing the medal tallies as well.

It could still be the best (but of course it's debatable). In Melbourne there was the home-town advantage. It was also much harder travelling halfway round the world. Some potential winners didn't even make the trip. |

Yep, a courageous run, when the slow pace of the first lap forced him (for his race strategy) to front-run for the whole of the second lap. The Kenyans swept to gold and silver. |

There are now 339 events. In 1956, there were less than half that many (151). At the moment Australia has 39 medals compared with 35 at the Melbourne games. Then, it was a medal in nearly a quarter of all events. Some further medals are to be decided, of course, in Tokyo but Australia presently has 1 medal in every ninth event. |

% of gold medals at the Olympic Games
1956 (Melbourne) = 13/151 (8.61%)
2004 (Athens) = 17/301 (5.65%)
1960 (Rome) = 8/150 (5.33%)
2000 (Sydney) = 16/300 (5.33%)
2020 (Tokyo) = 17/339 (5.01%)
1896 (Athens) = 2/43 (4.65%)
2008 (Beijing) = 14/302 (4.64%)
1972 (Munich) = 8/195 (4.10%)
1952 (Helsinki) = 6/149 (4.03%)
1964 (Tokyo) = 6/163 (3.68%)
1996 (Atlanta) = 9/271 (3.32%)
1968 (Mexico City) = 5/172 (2.91%)
1992 (Barcelona) = 7/257 (2.72%)
2012 (London) = 8/302 (2.65%)
2016 (Rio de Janeiro) = 8/306 (2.61%)
1932 (Los Angeles) = 3/117 (2.56%)
1924 (Paris) = 3/126 (2.38%)
1900 (Paris) = 2/95 (2.11%)
1912 (Stockholm) = 2/102 (1.96%)
1984 (Los Angeles) = 4/221 (1.81%)
1988 (Seoul) = 3/237 (1.27%)
1980 (Moscow) = 2/203 (0.99%)
1928 (Amsterdam) = 1/109 (0.92%)
1908 (London) = 1/110 (0.91%)
1948 (London) = 1/136 (0.74%)
1904 (St Louis) = 0/95 (0.00%)
1936 (Berlin) = 0/129 (0.00%)
1920 (Antwerp) = 0/156 (0.00%)
1976 (Montreal) = 0/198 (0.00%)
29 or 30 gold medals would match the 1956 Olympics tally. |
Thanks, Jezza. Those stats are very interesting. I remember Montreal as a real low. Poor Stephen Holland - it was as if it were a matter of national shame that he was the only swimming medallist - and "only" managed a bronze. With the benefit of some chronological distance, that was probably in part because the contrast between Shane Gould's brilliance in 1972 and the 1976 results was so stark. And, yet, the swimmers are now back to 20 medals, including 9 gold.
A lot of time, energy and money has been put into building up the national sporting teams since then. |

Shared gold in the men's high jump.
Then 100m men's gold to Jacobs in a PB of 9.80s. In a very open field post-Bolt, all place-getters posted PBs. Two GB sprinters were DQed for false starts, one in the SFs, one in the F. |
Italy did it again!
The men's 4x100m relay team snatched gold! Amazing! Their anchor leg was not run by Jacobs, but the guy who did run it just mowed down the GB anchor.
Earlier, the women's 4x100m relay was won by Jamaica, despite a heart-in-mouth first baton change. They just had too much raw speed. The bad baton change almost certainly cost them the WR, but at least they didn't drop the baton or get DQed. |

My parents pretty much said the same thing as you when it came to the '76 Olympics, particularly around the pressure on Stephen Holland.
The Fraser government established the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) amid the fallout of the Montreal games. _________________ | 1902 | 1903 | 1910 | 1917 | 1919 | 1927 | 1928 | 1929 | 1930 | 1935 | 1936 | 1953 | 1958 | 1990 | 2010 | 2023

Good point.
I do think the Olympics has been a successful one for Australia, but whether it's our best performance is up for debate.
Been the most enjoyable Olympics to watch since Athens 2004 in my opinion. _________________ | 1902 | 1903 | 1910 | 1917 | 1919 | 1927 | 1928 | 1929 | 1930 | 1935 | 1936 | 1953 | 1958 | 1990 | 2010 | 2023
