I assume that the sling tackle is now banned.
The sling tackle by Maynard didn't cause the head to hit the ground.
But he was penalized anyway.
Please umps explain the rule....in particular to Maynard

Yes it is, and Maynard might get cited and suspended for a week. The change occurred in July 2020.

"It is the action, we are pulling it right back to the action here [not the outcome]," Hocking said.

There was another tackle after that also ruled as dangerous and the Melb players arms were not even pinned.

Herein lies the conundrum- the AFL want to legislate out contact injury. They have made conflicting rules that make the game impossible to umpire.

Are Crisp and Maynard in trouble?

It was one of a serious of ridiculous decisions today, but proved that umpires don't have as much influence as some people believe.

It's funny, whenever we lose a close one the usual whingers will bring up a few free kicks that went against us, yet today when there was a lot of them in a very one sided umpiring display, we still dominated the game and got the win.

I can't remember who was which, but the one near the boundary line looked bad live, but on replay was fine, but the one given at CHF just a couple of minutes earlier was an absolutely disgraceful decision.

I agree. Good teams don’t need the umpires to win. It’s always been an excuse.

Yep, you can always find just as many mistakes by players that have more influence on the result than 1-2 umpiring decisions.

But there is no stat for the Sidebottom loopy handpass that goes down as an effective possession because it hits its target, but ends in a turnover because it was so slow the player is tackled immediately.

But instead people will crucify the one umpiring decision and not the player who missed a set shot or ran into an open goal and sprayed it.

We have had 3 players sidelined due to head or neck injuries yet no one has been in strife for it. Yet Keane gets a week for a trip after Kennedy put his leg in front. If they start suspending players for what Maynard and Crisp did then you may as well take the player out with a shirtfront and sideline him for the game.

Noble was sling tackled in front of their goals and the free was given to Melbourne. It was a very similar tackle. If you slow down a lot of tackles in footy, they look like the "replay" of the sling tackles, which are all in slow motion of course, to increase the drama!

The reality is the tackles aren't that different from a usual tackle, it's just what the umpires want to call. A good tackle that would result in a holding the ball free kick can be called a sling tackle, and thus the free kick basically reversed, if you want a 28 to 17 free kick count, with the dominant team on the wrong end... It all comes down to who the umpire wants to reward.

Crisp's looked the worse of the two, but it was always going to look somewhat ugly as the dee was in the air when the tackle was laid. Players are also trained to twist to avoid getting into their back, so it's difficult to see what else Crisp could do especially with the momentum he had.

Maynard's could have been avoided with the umps blowing the whistle immediately or at least quicker instead of the current trend of giving players ages to dispose of the footy. Taking the dee to ground meant he couldn't get rid of the footy.

This is Maynard's tackle which was awarded as a free to Melbourne: https://www.afl.com.au/video/631720/was-this-a-dangerous-tackle-by-maynard

You can hear some of the commentary talking about how the head doesn't touch the ground.

This didn't look like a sling tackle to me... just a strong physical tackle.

Other than the fact that it happened in a black and white jumper.
This normally warrants lethal injection, or The Chair.

Regardless, a good week for this to happen - the AwFuL [re: Gil McDickhead and the other putrid cowards], have duck-shoved that Adelaide/St.Kilda collision shit storm straight to Kangaroo Court to be dealt with.
Surprise-surprise: no clear definition on the rule when this hit has caused a broken jaw. I'd suggest old mate will be in trouble as his feet left the turf in the split second prior to impact.

Thus any sling tackles from this round, where the player has got up unharmed, will be dusted off without penalty by the weeks end.
