Nathan’s had his obvious setbacks at AFL level and also an of-field distraction that shifted his focus for a while. My son tells me he is back enjoying footy and is happy just to have some clear air once again.
He was another victim of the early draft pick curse. He shouldn’t have been pick 10 but I’m guessing we were seduced by his pace. Salem was his teammate at the dragons and went one pick before him but was twice the player Nathan was. That’s not a knock on Nathan and if not for the injury, he would have certainly played more senior footy.
And yes, the story about his parents ( father specifically ) is true.
Whether right or wrong, they believed Collingwoods injury management wasn’t good enough and advised the club they would be looking to further his career elsewhere.
Given that Nathan is once again happy doing what he is currently doing, I would hope he chooses to steer the same course for a while to come. |
It’s interesting reading about the family dynamics
I remember in the mid 200’s when I was working for the Brisbane broncos Wayne Brittian was coaching in the QAFL
They used to use some of our facilities once a fortnight and I become friendly with Wayne
We had lunch one day working on a planner for when they could use the facilities and we started talking about drafts and young players and he had at the time the best group of 16yr olds under his coaching on behalf of ALFQ in a elite academy
They trained with the seniors whilst getting extra assistance from Wayne and some former AFL players Wayne had on his playing list like Danny Dickfos, Tye Zantuck, Luke Weller
Wayne had 2 kids who were a cut above
But having been in the AFL as a coach and knowing the pitfalls then being able to offer the kids some mentoring from former AFL players it made a huge difference
The father would often just walk onto the training track and question Wayne or other coaches in front of the kid and playing group if he believed his child wasn’t been given special one in one coaching
One day one of the of the former players sat one of the boys overbearing parents down and said you are ruining this kids love of the game
I’ve seen the same when we had our elite academy kids in for special coaching and some fathers or mothers would want one on one time with the senior coach demanding there child be given X Y Z in preference to other kids
They were always told to butt out or it would cost the child his spot in the academy |
That made me chuckle and brought back a few memories. At 15, Nathan was playing seniors at Dingley ( when available ) The senior coach was none other than Shane Morwood and Darren Kappler was his assistant. They were the two that got the best out of his ability and turned him into a super fit athlete for the draft. I remember after one game, Morwood and Freeman senior were in a corner having a fairly robust discussion about where Nathan was being played in the seniors. Morwood walked past me after it was over and said something like “ thank Christ, the other two aren’t as good “ as a reference to Nathan being the second of three boys in the family.
Morwood was a brilliant coach at that level. Passionate, hands on, very successful and really put a lot of time into Nathan.
I hope Nathan remembers Shane as fondly. |

Nathan Freeman is available to be picked up in the mid season draft. Is it worth giving him another go? Been in sensational form for Frankston. _________________ Don't confuse your current path with your final destination. Would be a great pick-up; never had any problems with Gavin Crossica, and as long as Willie gets his billys we wont have a problem with him |

Well... Scharenberg would be an option; he is disposable and cheap.
He'd be a stop gap measure for a season or so, and he'd know that too.
Is he still in Victoria, or would he have to relocate from another state?
I doubt the club would have delisted him so hastily, if they could have forseen the injury toll to date... _________________ M I L L A N E 4 2 forever |
