He’s a great VFL player, clearly, no shame in that, but his disposal deficiencies would have always prevented him from a sustainable AFL career in the modern climate.

That’s pretty much it. He just couldn’t get balanced at the speed he was going. He also ran with his head down, so he missed a lot of options.
When I had him in U14s, I played him at CHB and he was a very close second in the goal kicking. He did the same thing every week. Win the ball, carry it 100 metres and then take the shot from 20 metres out.
No one ever caught him.

Glad to see he's finally getting on the park regularly, and would be nice to see him get another shot at an AFL career, but as for us ... well, you all know the saying about the definition of insanity, doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting different results.

it was all about speed. we were all complaining our midfield was too slow. so we went looking for speed. We really wanted Salem but the Demons took him first.

Ahhh, what coulda been?Good luck to Nate - hope he makes it back to the big time. I recall recruiters, spruikers and commentators salivating over him being a mix of Shuey and Dangerfield....other than his obvious kicking deficiencies and injury proneness who the heck wouldn’t have picked him. I know I was over the moon at the time we got Shazzer and Freeman....ahhh, what coulda been?

And Salem plays as a distributor now, not a mad break the line man....funny how things turn out I suppose

Another quiet game:
He won 35 disposals and led Frankston’s third consecutive win on the weekend, defeating the impressive Aspley.

35 was a quieter afternoon for Freeman, who had been averaging 41 disposals per game across the opening fortnight.

So with our two picks in the mid season draft, we'll take Freeman and Gault. With Ben Crocker making a case in the VFL.

Yep, trained with Carlton in the off-season but wasn’t picked up.

Player, manager Nathan Freeman handing out reality checks

https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/snap-shot-player-manager-nathan-freeman-handing-out-reality-checks-20210504-p57oo6.html

"... Nathan Freeman has made a great fist of life post-football, working with Connors Sports Management after his AFL career ended...

Rest assured Freeman is not playing VFL in the hope of a belated return to the AFL.

He’s just enjoying his time in the midfield at Frankston under Danny Ryan, who coached Freeman when he was at the Sandringham Dragons as a junior.

And the bonus is that he is more aware than most at what the players who walk through Connors Sports’ doors are going through each week. And, in many cases, capable of beating them."

Having coached Nathan as a junior ( Dingley ) lived around the corner from him and have a son who is good mates with him, I’m probably in a better position than most to form an opinion.
Nathan’s had his obvious setbacks at AFL level and also an of-field distraction that shifted his focus for a while. My son tells me he is back enjoying footy and is happy just to have some clear air once again.
He was another victim of the early draft pick curse. He shouldn’t have been pick 10 but I’m guessing we were seduced by his pace. Salem was his teammate at the dragons and went one pick before him but was twice the player Nathan was. That’s not a knock on Nathan and if not for the injury, he would have certainly played more senior footy.
And yes, the story about his parents ( father specifically ) is true.
Whether right or wrong, they believed Collingwoods injury management wasn’t good enough and advised the club they would be looking to further his career elsewhere.
Given that Nathan is once again happy doing what he is currently doing, I would hope he chooses to steer the same course for a while to come.

It’s interesting reading about the family dynamics
I remember in the mid 200’s when I was working for the Brisbane broncos Wayne Brittian was coaching in the QAFL
They used to use some of our facilities once a fortnight and I become friendly with Wayne
We had lunch one day working on a planner for when they could use the facilities and we started talking about drafts and young players and he had at the time the best group of 16yr olds under his coaching on behalf of ALFQ in a elite academy
They trained with the seniors whilst getting extra assistance from Wayne and some former AFL players Wayne had on his playing list like Danny Dickfos, Tye Zantuck, Luke Weller
Wayne had 2 kids who were a cut above
But having been in the AFL as a coach and knowing the pitfalls then being able to offer the kids some mentoring from former AFL players it made a huge difference
The father would often just walk onto the training track and question Wayne or other coaches in front of the kid and playing group if he believed his child wasn’t been given special one in one coaching
One day one of the of the former players sat one of the boys overbearing parents down and said you are ruining this kids love of the game
I’ve seen the same when we had our elite academy kids in for special coaching and some fathers or mothers would want one on one time with the senior coach demanding there child be given X Y Z in preference to other kids
They were always told to butt out or it would cost the child his spot in the academy

Any reports on how Matt Scharenberg is travelling at Olinda? He could be anything.

Heard he was studying for a degree and had become disillusioned with footy at the highest level
Shame without injury he could have been anything
In the small sample size we saw he looked classy and had all the attributes we drafted him for
That draft year hurt us long term losing both top 10 picks to injury before they could barely pay a game between them
I wonder know knowing we knew he had foot issues prior to drafting him should we have packaged up pick 6 and our second round pick traded up and gone after the Bont who apparently was on top of our draft board that year
Hindsight is a wonderful thing
