My understanding is the salary cap issues predate Guy being our list manager.
I suspect it started when Gubby Allan was brought back to the club in 2016. |
All our cap problems began in January 2020 when Ned Guy caved to a completely unreasonable demand. |

So that would be the Grundy signature. Then I guess we have to add Moore and JDG. Bad management I reckon. I would have let Grundy piss off to SA and recruited a fresh young ruckman. Would have allowed us to keep Traloar. _________________ Don't confuse your current path with your final destination. FWIW Kane Cornes reckons the Pies should have looked to trade out Sidebottom or De Goey instead of Treloar. |

We did well to get rid of Treloar. Maybe we should have traded the other two as well. |

The problems predate the Grundy contract.
Aish was offloaded in 2019 because of cap issues, and it's been noticeable since 2017 that we haven't been heavily involved in trade period, barring the Beams/Roughead year.
If anything, the acquisition of Beams caused us bigger problems, along with the Wells and Mayne free agency contracts. _________________ | 1902 | 1903 | 1910 | 1917 | 1919 | 1927 | 1928 | 1929 | 1930 | 1935 | 1936 | 1953 | 1958 | 1990 | 2010 | 2023 | |

Kane is not completely foolish but he's wrong on this one. _________________ All Aboard!! Choo Choo!!! |

Wells was always a mistake - unless he was 'free' & even than cause he took a spot on the list. The less said about Mayne the better but at least we got something back from him.
Grundy is an amazing ruckman, but did we make a mistake signing him for so long and on so much money - you bet we did, it's a huge problem.. and the key reason for that is because we paid overs - not on his game winning abilities, but due to our emotional fragility - I mean if Adelaide had of poached him... unless he basically broke down... we'd never hear the end of it - signing Grundy was purely an emotional counter thrust in the hope that he was more of a game winner than we know he is... i.e he don't go forward clunk marks and kick goals. _________________ All Aboard!! Also due to the fact that the Western Bulldogs play him as an outside mid, where all his fantastic attributes are maximised. The HS article notes that he rates elite for effective disposals and score involvements
Still shaking my head in disbelief that we forced him out for sfa. |
Went at 48% today. Is that worth $950k? |

The other thing to add is Kane most likely thought it was a good idea for us to trade them both, to PA. _________________ All Aboard!! Choo Choo!!! |

I say it now and I said this at the time, Collingwood should have let him go to Adelaide and then kept Treloar while recruiting another younger ruckman as back up to Grundy and Cameron. _________________ Don't confuse your current path with your final destination. His time at the club, might go down as the dumbest thing we ever did.
From paying too much to get him, to paying him too much to getting not enough for trading him. All boils down to a disaster.
Whatever happened to the days of DeGoey, Crisp and Greenwood for Beams! _________________ Ohhh, the Premiership's a cakewalk ....... |
