Have a look how many times Ryder hit it straight to our guys and it splashed all over them. All ruckmen do it from time to time - it's just that our guys never take advantage because, for the most part, they're not up to it. If you were starting again to build a midfield at Collingwood, the only one you'd keep would be Pendlebury - and he's about 90 years old. Seriously, which of them would get a game as a starting mid at another club? |

JDG would perhaps be the only one, with Tay Adams in reserve. _________________ Free Julian Assange!!

But you can't just blame Grundy for those kind of moments. Our mids were more often than not non-existent today. In the first three quarters of the game, it literally looked like we had no mids at all quite often.
You cannot expect Grundy to look like good against opposition ruckmen when he has no midfield to hit the ball to. |
But, MTTM, when Grundy whacks the ball straight to the oppo, often it's oppo standing still on his own. How are the mids responsible for that?
And we see the same stuff whoever the oppo is. e.g. North! North are headed for the Spoon (though we and Hawthorn are a chance to snatch it from them). How can anyone claim North's midfield is better than ours. They have Cunnington... And then?? Stephenson???
Who are these great North mids that are making Grundy's tapwork look bad? |

JDG would need to get properly fit. I'd clear Adams in a heartbeat. He's been a major reason for our midfield decline. He isn't a one-touch player and you just cannot have fumblers around the contest. He's a great trier and you can't question his attitude - but, fundamentally, he's not good enough to play in that position. He wastes too many opportunities because he isn't quite up to it. Add that to his lack of pace and you have a guy who really isn't very useful at all. |

Yeah, he makes mistakes. But the point is, with our currently dysfunctional midfield, the mistakes that Grundy makes look even worse because there is no counterbalance of whn his good taps are taken advantage of. I thought our clearance play for the first three quarters was appalling. Our mids were demolished by theirs. You cannot therefore judge what Grundy achieved today on a level playing field with Ryder.
Clearly our problem starts from the centre. But to me, with the undoubted decline of both Pendles and Sidey, the injuries to Tay Adams, and the lack of other quality big bodied mids and the total lack of any fast mids has been the decisive factor. It is a real irony that for so long it seemed that Bux was focussed on amassing the greatest midfield ever seen in the AFL, and today our midfield is hardly AFL standard. _________________ Free Julian Assange!!

Cunnington, Thomas and Davies-Uniacke had 24 clearances between them against Footscray today. Footscray had 29 (to North's 36) and just 10 centre clearances to North's 17. Their team also plays a reasonable brand of territorial football (they play it badly, of course - but the game plan isn't awful). Of the top 6 kick-getters on the field, 5 were North players. |

Thanks for mentioning this. This is a feeling i have had for a while. A team such as NM, lower than us, still looks better than us in terms of taking territory and rejecting any retrogressive ultra defensive models like we use (defence from our HB line).
They still lack the skills and players capable of executing it well, but they are practising it, and when their bodies mature, maybe just maybe they will start to execute.
But us, we won't be able to execute any positive game style because we haven't actually practised it.
That is why the season can't end fast enough, so we can find and establish our new coach and his team of assistants. _________________ Free Julian Assange!!

I actually agree with P4S on thus. Grundy has literally no midfield to tap to. It's shocking.
Put 2 a grade mids in there and Grundy would win the Brownlow. _________________ Buon Giorno |

It was fantastic. Adams led the way in this department.
Can't stop smiling tonight. It's been a good weekend. _________________ | 1902 | 1903 | 1910 | 1917 | 1919 | 1927 | 1928 | 1929 | 1930 | 1935 | 1936 | 1953 | 1958 | 1990 | 2010 | 2023 | |

Just on the issue of where the Club is in its rebuild, here are the list changes for 2020 and 2021:
2020 - In: Wilson, Rantall, Cameron, Bianco and Ruscoe. Out: Goldsack, Wells, Aish, Murray, Crocker.
2021 - In: Henry, Macrae, McInnes, Poulter, McMahon, McCreery, Ginnivan, Chugg, Johnson and Begg. Out: Reid, Varcoe, Dunn, Scharenberg, Broomhead, Beams, Stephenson, Bosenavulagi, Treloar, Phillips, Appleby, Wills and Langdon.
That's 18 players moved on, many of them with considerable experience, before you add in Greenwood (who has already retired), replaced by the coming Daicos. No doubt there will be others at the end of the present season. This is not the place for that speculation. Half the list has already been replaced in two seasons. Pendlebury, Sidebottom, Mayne, Roughead and Howe are all nearing the end, too. We have to keep a few competent, experienced players to teach the others how to prepare, train and play. |
