Lock her up,lock her up!The Maga crazies used to scream about Hillary Clinton back in 2016.Ironic that their cult hero is the only one who is likely to be locked up.But I suppose irony is lost on people like that. They probably wouldn’t even know the meaning of the word.

Yesterday I was watching CNN and they interviewed this guy who was totally unaware that Trump had to answer charges in court! He also said that this stuff was irrelevant to him because Trump is always going to get his vote.

Yeah I very much doubt a single vote has switched either way as a result of this (or, indeed, as a result of any court cases involving Trump).

There may be people who like and dislike various things about Trump or see him as something more like a necessary evil " and thus may be on the fence about whether they'll cast a vote for him in this election " but there can't possibly be anyone in the US who doesn't have an opinion set in stone about him by now.

Just curious, would you say Nelson Mandela should be disqualified from leading his country. He had conviction.

What about Martin Luther King? Would you say he shouldn't be considered for President had he not been murdered. He was a felon.

Factually that might be correct, but putting Trump in the same leadership group as Mandela and Luthor-King is an extreme stretch, except maybe in Trumps mind.

I'm absolutely fine with criminals (either during or after jail time) running for president. I'm not fine with them being barred from voting, which is ironically the case in many US states. It's a weird double standard, that's for sure.

Yeah, that's the funny bit. Trump can run for President, can be elected, but can't vote for himself. Laughing

Ironically he probably could but only because the case was held in Democrat-dominated New York (one of the more progressive states regarding voting rights) and not Republican-governed Florida, where he actually lives.

You'd like to think that cognitive dissonance, particularly for the many Trump voters who are now convinced that the justice system is rigged in favour of the powers that be, might at some stage translate to bipartisan support for voting rights reform. But that would be a far too sensible outcome in a country as tribal as America.

Here's some careful analysis of the likely (lack of much) fallout, based largely on recent polling anticipating the possibility of conviction: https://abcnews.go.com/538/trumps-guilty-verdict-impact-2024-presidential-election/story?id=110650906

The real question is whether - whatever the immediate polling changes might be - there is any impact that survives (either way) to election day.

Yeah but Trump's conviction is for stuff most people think is a "nothing burger" and simply political.

Hunter Biden was just prosecuted and convicted by the same justice department that idiot Trump claims Biden is weaponising against him.If Biden had such a direct control over the justice department, why would he he allow it to prosecute his own son?It makes no sense at all.But then again, nothing that Trump or his followers says makes any sense.

People really do get convicted for the most insane things over there. Imagine facing jail time for lying on a form about being a drug addict. (Of course I don’t think guns should be legal at all, but that’s not the point here " proper gun control has to happen at the distribution and manufacturing level, not making scapegoats out of individuals for failing to dot their is and cross their ts.)

I seriously loathe the US criminal justice system and generally hate reading stories about court cases over there. Between powerful people getting off scot free " and yes, I know Hunter is one, at least by proxy " and everyone else who doesn’t slip through the net getting wildly disproportionate sentences, it’s rare to see anything approaching actual justice.

It's a struggle for Republicans over Hunter (Good name for someone buying a gun). Here's a bloke who buys a gun and they want him to go to jail for at the same time they spew the Second Amendment at every opportunity. God Bless America.

Mind you MGT is the gift that keeps on giving. Greene, 50, said to the crowd of die-hard MAGA enthusiasts: 'If you think gas prices are high now, just wait until you are forced to drive an electric vehicle. America is sick of it.'
