Considering the wickets India has taken, Smith's innings is top drawer.

Smith on the brink of a century.

Everyone will mindlessly say he's back. He's great. etc. etc. etc.

But this is an extremely flat track. So it's totally what The FTB does.

Meanwhile, Oz batsmen are collapsing around him. As always.

That's why flat tracks are bad not just for cricket, but for Oz. Oz batsmen find a way to get out no matter how flat the pitch, so it's better for Oz if the wickets have something for the bowlers.

Did you put money on it, Donny?? [If I could find a $ emoticon, I'd put it here.]

(I did not. Too timid to bet on things like that atm.)

It was 2.75 for Smith to be top scorer.

-------------------------------------------

Brad Hodge last night (on BBL):

"I love it when the ball moves and seams."

He went on to call the SCG pitch a "batting paradise" that produced "ponderous" cricket.

Can Starc get a 50?

He just hit a 6 to move to 22. (Have I mentioned how flat the pitch is?)

Oops. That put the mockers on him...

8 down now.

Can Smith get the not out Steve-Waugh-style, to inflate his already inflated batting average?

Hazlewood....

Makes me think of that ODI in NZ where Stoinis scored a century and was about to win the game single-handedly for Oz.

Hazlewood did not have to do anything except avoid getting out.

He got himself run out at the non-striker's end. Shocked Sad

Ever since, I've questioned Hazlewood's sanity, or at least his cricketing brain.

Come on, mate. How about some credit where due ?

Flat track or not, 7 wickets have fallen, at the other end, while he's been at the crease.

Shouldn't you condemn the 7 for losing their wickets? Wink
(The betting market did predict 465 runs yesterday, and Oz have fallen well short!!)

Let me see what Brad Hodge has to say tonight. Wink

As I said before, apart from my fears for the Game of Cricket, I think Oz has the best chance of winning Tests on sporting wickets. Flat wickets blunt their biggest asset, their bowling attack, and the batsmen sell their wickets too cheaply regardless.

Think e.g. of the fairly recent tour in India, where in the First Test the ball was turning square from the start. It made SO'K a monster bowler and Oz won. The following Tests were normal Indian pitches, where the pitch is really flat for the first 3 days. Oz duly capitulated.

Just looked up the scorecard:

https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/aus-tour-of-new-zealand-2016-17-1020005/new-zealand-vs-australia-1st-odi-1020013/full-scorecard

Stoinis 3/49 (10) & 146* (117), nine 4s, eleven 6s. Shocked

Hazlewood 0 (0). Run out (Williamson). Crying or Very sad

There were 3 full overs remaining when Hazlewood threw his wicket away!

For NZ, Neil Broom top scored with 73 (75). Who the **** is Neil Broom?
(Kiwi answer: Who the **** is Sam Heazlett?*)

* Which makes me wonder: where is Heazlett now? Is he playing in the BBL? He made 4 (11) in that ODI.

My comments were about Smith - not his team mates.
