It's best not to mention Cloke. The Club seems to have no use for great KPFs.

Your point about the storm is very valid there the envy of every NRL club

As for replacing retiring premiership players
Ball replaced by Adams fair exchange IMO
Swan we didn’t see coming hard to plan for that
The rest well your right
Hopefully players like Rantall can get some opportunities in the near future so we can see them
I’ve been critical of our recruitment for ages there seems to be no forward thinking we recruit adhoc bits n pieces seems like we have no set plans
The talent coming through is a year or 2 away from being AFL standard players each week
We’ve traded away our draft picks this year again on last years draft if we miss with them then we are screwed for another couple years
Getting rid of talent like Treloar (I know you don’t rate him but look at his performances playing in his right position as a outside mid) because you can’t manage a salary cap properly is the definition of amateurish
Unless the club fixes all its issues we won’t be anywhere near contending for another 3-5yrs

What about the mid season draft?

Have I remembered correct that we have 2 list spots available?

If we do, do we go for the best KPP? or is that too risky to have another tall clogging the list not get a gig in the team?

Next year we don't have a 1st round pick, which would of been used on Nick Daicos anyway, so do we try and get the best mids available to have a new young brigade through the next few years?

Up to two spots available. It costs a lot of money to run a player on a club list.
There’s no point picking up a player who is 6’ 7” unless you genuinely think he’s at least half a chance to make it. Recruiters get talls wrong in the first round of the National draft, so the likelihood of nailing one in the mid season top up draft is very unlikely. History shows there arent many successful key forwards who are selected after the first round of the National draft. ( off the top, Walker and B Brown are major exceptions )
Technically we don’t have a first round pick in the 2021 draft but we do have the points accumulated that will allow us to pick up Daicos. So when Daicos is called out at pick 2 ( example ) and we match it, the history books will still say Collingwood took him with pick # 2 in the draft ( it’s just that we got there the hard way )

And it also costs a lot of money to run a player on another club's list, but we dig deep here....

This seasons mid year draft will be far more interesting than previous, especially for Vic kids that missed out in last years national draft due to there being no footy. This is especially true of taller players who tend to be riskier propositions. There will likely be some real gems in this time as undrafted players who didn't have the opportunity last year to forward their case, now have some exposed form to make judgements from.

Having 2 spots, while we may choose not to fill them, has us in a strong position to benefit from this unique situation.

3-5yrs is optimistic if the club does not get professional.

Interesting to watch his kicking - its quite an 'elegant' style. He seems to get good movement with minimal effort. I reckon he would be a good set shot generally

^ There is a replay of the entire VFL game from last week, in which he was clearly our best player, playing strictly as a mid. I hope they will play him in the midfield tomorrow - otherwise there's going to be a lot of people complaining about him not being big enough to play half forward.

Here's the link to that replay: https://www.werribeefc.com.au/live-stream

I am agreeing with a lot of other supporters now, that we overpaid by a good 250k per year for Grundy's contract

He is a not match winner, and just doesn't dominate enough to be demanding that 7mil contract.

We are going to get burnt on this contract, like the Travis Cloke one.

Worse.. unless we change coach.

Change our game style - the coach is relatively irrelevant. Look at the Tigers - Hardwicke was gone in 2016, they finished 13th, the playing group was demoralised and were in a rut, then things changed via introduction of new assistant coaches and strategists with innovative thinking and they changed their game style. Overall, pound for pound, the Tigers are not that great but as a team playing as one to their style they are direct, confident and take the game on, they play an awesome irrepressible brand of footy. They propel the ball forward at all costs and back it up with fierce run and pressure on and off the ball. They support each other and tackle like they’re possessed and look to better each other in a selfless manner. It’s not rocket science and relatively simple but they have 100% buy in from everyone from the CEO to the boot cleaner, there’s hardly any BS off the ground or behind the scenes and if it does occur it is quickly dealt with and buried before it festers and derails their season. Hardwicke was still coaching the same way he was when they were ninthmond but the system changed around him and 3 flags later everyone is still scratching their heads how.

We had it for a brief moment in 2018 but the off-field BS crept in again (racism, sexual assault allegations, salary cap mismanagement, team disharmony) and we lost it. The coach is important, but he’s only one part to what is a multifaceted machine.

Brilliant analysis. So good to read such comments in the light of other opinions and discussions. Well thought out and makes a lot of sense to me.
