Post subject: Assistant Coach Shake Up | |
|
Essendon have just made a significant change to their coaching staff. With Daniel Giansiracusa joining them from the Bulldogs.
I think it's obvious we need to change things up a little and everyone is talking about what Collingwood should or could be doing....
Nathan Buckley will not be sacked and will be coaching this club through to the end of 2021. That needs to be accepted. But who can come in to help get us back into contention?
James Hird -
Pro: Great footy brain. Great relationship with younger players. Has something to prove.
Con: Has lost a lot of respect. Does he still have the passion? Relationship with Bucks? Might attract unwanted media attention. Will divide supporters if this is a good idea or not.
What Role: Full time midfield or forward coach. VFL head coach. A possible part time role?
Verdict: Hey you wanted a shake up. A controversial addition. But depending on your view of the whole ASADA saga, could be a massive upgrade on Sando/Harvs. I remember hearing that Nathan Buckley was one of the first people to reach out and visit Hird after he was in hospital in 2016. So their relationship shouldn't be a worry. But I doubt Hird will return to an AFL club. But do YOU want him over Sando or Harves?
Michael Voss -
Pro: Has spent 6 seasons with Port and has vastly improved his reputation and coaching skills.
Con: Can he coexist with Bucks? Theres a bit of history there.
What Role: Full time midfield coach.
Verdict: I dont know if he and Bucks have a great relationship. Fans would need to put the rivalry aside. I think he's happy at Port and wouldn't be interested in a move to Collingwood.
Alex Rance -
Pro: Comes from a successful side. New ideas.
Con: Very green for a coach. Recent off-field controversy.
What Role: Would report to backline coach and primarily work with the defenders.
Verdict: I dont think he'll walk straight into an assistant job, but I guess Boyd did. I think he's suited to working with the defenders as a young and respected figure. But is there limited jobs under the new rules/cap thats coming in? I've heard he's linked to the club.
Brad Scott -
Pro: Lots of experience. Has previously worked at the club. Can walk straight into a game day position.
Con: Another with a heated passed with Bucks.
What Role: Senior Assistant. Midfield or defence.
Verdict: Would be a good fit if he and Bucks are ok. But does he want to return to an AFL position? I dont think he does.
Paul Roos -
Pro: Good reputation and well respected. Experience. Knows and gets on well with Bucks. Footy brain.
Con: Prefers media duties. Might have a been-there-done-that attitude towards it.
What Role: Senior Assistant. Midfield Coach.
Verdict: Many would be excited to get this guy to the club. He has a good record and is well respected in the AFL. But he probably does not want to return to a coaching role with his media duties.
Luke Hodge -
Pro: A born winner. Former captain of one of the greatest teams of all time.
Con: Limited coaching experience, but was a player-coach with the Lions.
What Role: Midfield Coach.
Verdict: Another popular choice from Clarkos school of knocks. Has media commitments and I dont think interested in working for Collingwood.
Sam Mitchell -
Pro: Ready to step up.
Con: Doesn't like the club.
What Role: Midfield coach.
Verdict: Unlikely to work for the Pies.
Johnathan Brown -
Pro: Well respected. Doesn't accept poor results.
Con: No coaching experience.
What Role: Works primarily with the big forwards. Oh we dont have any.
Verdict: Is loving his media jobs. Might be interested in a part time job (like Sav at Carlton). But will remain a media guy.
Ross Lyon -
Pro: Experience. Ready to go.
Con: Outdated approach? Cant think of anything.
What Role: Senior Assistant.
Verdict: Some would welcome this addition, but he may find himself coaching North.
David Hale -
Pro: Built some experience and still young at 36. Gets one back from Freo.
Con: Cant think of any.
What Role: Ruck coach/game day bench coach.
Verdict: Is happy at Freo and would want a more demanding position if he was to leave.
Dean Solomon -
Pro: Available. Highly rated. Lots of assistant experience and still young. Ready to step straight in.
Con: Strange exit from last coaching job. More to it? In demand and a possible choice for the Kangers job.
What Role: Midfield coach.
Verdict: Has business ventures since being released by the Suns. Teams are interested in him though. Would be a good addition.
Justin Leppitsch -
Pro: Comes from Richmond. Has enough experience.
Con: Hates the Pies and maybe Bucks too?
What Role: Defensive coach.
Verdict: More than happy at the Tigers. Not fond of Collingwood.
Dean Laidley -
Pro: Brings a J. Edgar Hoover approach.
Con: Brings a J. Edgar Hoover approach.
What Role: Could drive the team bus across the Nullarbor.
Verdict: Has other commitments.
Please list your coaches if you have any other candidates (and theres plenty).
This article suggests Harvey and Sanderson as possibilities for the North job. It also suggests Malthouse. Interesting views:

Anyway, imagine a coaching staff with Bucks, Hird and Voss... _________________ A Goal Saved Is 2 Goals Earned! |

Dean lady mkII. Loved tha junk yard dog and was good when he was assistant to MM but we really need to make some changes at pie land and it seems we “let go” of our assistants without a second thought. Doesn’t say much about Sando or Harves does it. _________________ no second chances |

From an article on the AFL website regarding the short list for the North Melbourne coaching role.
"It is believed St Kilda great and Collingwood senior assistant Robert Harvey and Brisbane champion and Port Adelaide senior assistant Michael Voss have been considered by North Melbourne "
Please please take Robert. He is really good. Perfect fit for North. |

If he missed out on this one as well, makes you question his real value in the coaching sphere..... can't be a Senior Assistant forever. Or can you? 🤔 |

Since Collingwood is paying part of the salaries of players leaving the club, can we also pay part of the salaries of the assistant coaches leaving? |

Looks like Voss staying at Port (or North if he gets the gig over Noble's dad).
I'd take Hird, Hodge and Nick Riewoldt. |
