Draft can be a box of chocolates though, you never know if you’ll get Lindt, Koko Black, or Melbourne Show Bag no-brand chocolate. So many top ten have ended up disappointing, and so many bottom 40-60 have been superstars. There’s an unknown. Kayle Kirby, could have been a Pickett-like superstar, but who knew he had a heart condition that would end his career before it barely started? Who knew James Hird would be a premiership superstar at pick 79? I just don’t put trust in the draft anymore.

The science has come a long way since Hird was drafted....if thatcws today he would be a top.5 pick with the draft combines etc.Your right for every diamond thier is a rock. That is why you notice when sides hit the draft table now they do it with multiple top end picks.if your going to do it go hard. Trade De Goey we could have three picks inside the top 20..add that to next years haul of a guaranteed top 5 pick in young Diacos...and I think we can have a good foundation...ghe list we have right now..just isn't going to work..too many flaws.

Do we do a Hawthorn though and get proven players with plenty still in their tank to fill our gaps (the Burgoyne etc trades, not their latest)? Essendon is imploding right now, Adelaide the same. Go hard and outside the box maybe?

We need to refresh the list, but we kept so many injured / old players on the list meaning the refresh hasn't happened.

We look like a team that was banned from participating in the draft for a couple of years.

^^^ That actually makes sense. Although we got a good look at Ruscoe this year, he’s going to be better. Stephenson, bloody hell that betting scandal wrecked him, might need another club to get over it. We’ve traded well, Roughie was a steel but struggled in the hub end of the season and looked tired. Our father son picks have been promising, Tyler and Daicos and Kelly will get better. No VFL has really hurt their development though.

Beams needs to be cut. Harsh, but we’re not his therapist. Enough. Wells was a dice roll Buckley wasn’t happy about but we gave power to Gubby, and it bit us on the bum. Mayne took a couple of years to get back to form but is near the end. Should we be spending 2-3 years “developing” mature age players to get back form and fitness only for them to play for a couple of years when that development time could get us a ten year player from a kid?

We should have gone harder for Tom Lynch.

Hawthorn did both when you think about it: 04' 05' 06' they drafted hard...theychad some flops (Mitch Thorpe at pick 6) but that 04' draft was a huge success. They then brought in the established talent.

We have not used the relative low picks we have had well. For the most part the high end draft talent we have brought in recent time has been Father son and NGA. Great players...but the spending two picks on one player is just such a huge risk. Trelaor was never going to repay the two pick 7's spent on him..not his fault...it was just a very silly deal....I know one was a future first round...but your essentially saying this player is worth pick.7 + pick 1 to 18 the next year
...he was only ever worth 1 first rounder. Very very few midfeilders are worth more...Ablett.jr at his hight...Judd..that sort of realm. Key forwards...or key deffenders, yes much harder to find.

We paid going rate for Treloar. Other clubs have coughed up similar for players as good as Treloar (Shiel cost Essendon about the same and he was two years older than Treloar when Shiel shifted). We got back a future second round draft pick which we used on WHE, who was a former number 4 draft pick, so the way to look at it is we paid two first round draft picks for Treloar and WHE, who themselves are worth a first round draft pick each. There isn't an issue with Treloar who is worth what we paid. The real issue is with a player like Beams who was about 28 years old when he returned to Collingwood and had mental health issues at Brisbane. That has been an absolute disaster, not the Treloar trade. Treloar has been fantastic for us.
