Now it's Facebook's turn to crack the sooks:

https://www.theguardian.com/media/2020/sep/01/facebook-instagram-threatens-block-australians-sharing-news-landmark-accc-media-law

Quote:
“Assuming this draft code becomes law, we will reluctantly stop allowing publishers and people in Australia from sharing local and international news on Facebook and Instagram,” the managing director of Facebook Australia & New Zealand Will Easton said in a blog post on Tuesday.

“This is not our first choice – it is our last. But it is the only way to protect against an outcome that defies logic and will hurt, not help, the long-term vibrancy of Australia’s news and media sector.”

So they are going to "stop people sharing news"?

Yer right.

They were going to "stop people pushing terrorism" and "stop people peddling anti-vaxer lies", and "stop people spreading fake news" too.

Still waiting for any of that.

Twitter isn't as downright evil as Facebook, but today's news has an example from that other super-spreader: Donald Trump, QAnon and the limit of Twitter's crackdown on conspiracies

A good, even-handed segment on this from earlier this week on Media Watch:

Facebook has been put on trial for one of its appalling privacy invasions here in Australia (as well as many other places). Search "Cambridge Analyitica" if you are not up to speed on this.

Facebook was found guilty and fined. Facebook is currently appealing this guilty verdict to the High Court. They are not trying to pretend that they didn't do it. They are not trying to pretend that it wasn't a crime. They are trying to pretend that they don't do any business in Australia. Because there is "no such thing" as Facebook in Australia, Facebook claims, the company cannot be put on trial for anything it does.

Meanwhile, because they don't like not being allowed to steal copyrighted news from Australian outlets, they are having a big grumble - led by their Australian Managing Director

Yep, you read that right. Facebook "does not do any business in Australia" but has an Australian board of directors and an Australian managing director.

^ You couldn't make it up, could you? Like so many corporations, here when it suits them and not here when it doesn't suit them (mostly for taxation purposes but also legal liability). I wish we could find a way to clamp down on such dishonesty and legally declare it what it is: fraud and theft.

Indeed. I would give me left one for the chance to sit on the High Court bench with my wig and gown, hearing their lawyer argue that one .... and laughing out loud before dismissing the case and ordering that they pay punitive costs.

(Question: could I give their lawyer a short custodial sentence for contempt? I mean, for a qualified lawyer to present an argument that transparently ridiculous strikes me as contemptuous. Why not give him a week in quod to think it over?)

They will too ... for just as long as it takes them to realise that Australians will rapidly adapt to using any of the many different search engines.

What they fear is that other nations will see Australia's actions and, one by one, follow suit. And they will too. Google has treated the world with contempt. Now it is payback time.

Popcorn anyone?

Google's response.

Straight out of the box that seems totally fair so I'm either missing something or they're spinning beautifully.

I'm missing the text version. I very seldom bother listening to people yammer away on Youtube (or anywhere else) saying in 15 minutes what I could read in 30 seconds.

Ditto, but it's a less than 2 minute video.
