In a game they were expected to collect the points, Collingwood responded abysmally to ultimately lose by 12 points against Fremantle, despite having the lead by 4 points heading into the last quarter. The first half in particular from the Woods was an absolute crap fest, with uncontested marks conceded, clearances lost at crucial times, simple defensive errors that resulted in goals, while there was next-to-no cohesion with the forwards to be able to convert an adequate number of goals. The only positive from the first quarter is that Freo were held scoreless, but on the contrary, the Woods only scored 1 major. All the forward entries in the world, the Magpies had for no reward, while the Dockers had significantly fewer entries with greater scoreboard impact throughout the entire game. That loss has impaled my morale until Thursday.

The categories Collingwood gained were from handballs by +10 (149 - 139), hit-outs were +23 ( 51-28 ), uncontested possessions were won by +15 (198 - 183), intercept possessions had a differential of +5 (69 - 64), +1 for Contested Marks ( 9 - 8 ), Tackles Inside 50 was +2 (8 - 6), before closing out the evening in front of the Inside 50s count by +9 (43 - 34). Fremantle had gains from disposals by +13 (331 - 318), +23 for kicks (192 - 169), contested possessions were won by +36 (151 - 115), while clearances had an advantage of +15 (45 - 30), with differentials of +3 for centre clearances ( 11 - 8 ) and stoppage clearances were +12 (34 - 22), before the Dockers nudged ahead for Marks Inside 50 by +1 (6 - 5) and edged ahead in tackles which was won by +5 (52 - 47). Marks were even at 65 apiece.

Adam Treloar (30 disposals @ 57%, 411 metres gained, 14 contested possessions, 16 uncontested possessions, 3 intercept possessions, 13 kicks, 17 handballs, 3 marks, 2 tackles, 3 score involvements, 8 clearances, 8 stoppage clearances, 2 Inside 50s & 2 Rebound 50s) continues to win the ball, without using it as effectively from stoppages as the team required them to be. Accumulating possessions is not an issue for Treloar, yet I would like him to maximise impact with his ball use going forward.

Steele Sidebottom (25 disposals @ 68%, 321 metres gained, 9 contested possessions, 16 uncontested possessions, 4 intercept possessions, 12 kicks, 13 handballs, 4 marks, 3 tackles, 6 score involvements, 2 clearances, 2 stoppage clearances, 4 Inside 50s & 2 goals) single-handedly kept Collingwood alive in the contest with a sublime second half, after an indifferent first half with 6 disposals, which included a second term mare with 1 possession. I'll look forward to you putting four quarters together against Sydney, Steele.

Taylor Adams (18 disposals @ 39%, 144 metres gained, 10 contested possessions, 8 uncontested possessions, 9 kicks, 9 handballs, 3 marks, 6 tackles, 2 score involvements, 7 clearances, 3 centre clearances, 4 stoppage clearances & 2 Inside 50s) had a woeful game where basically all of his possessions counted for nothing, while allowing his direct-opponent Caleb Serong to cut the Magpies up in the midfield. That's arguably Taylor's poorest game for the club, especially as acting-skipper.

Jamie Elliott (15 disposals @ 47%, 281 metres gained, 9 contested possessions, 6 uncontested possessions, 8 kicks, 7 handballs, 6 tackles, 4 clearances, 3 centre clearances & 4 Inside 50s) found a bit more of the ball in the middle and won a few centre clearances (as many as Adams) that did not add enough impetus Inside 50 nor the scoreboard. I'd like to see Bucks and Sando rotate him a bit more up forward, as that's where he is more likely to decide games, rather than relying on him to be a first-choice on-baller in the centre square. I'd like Billy to spend more time in the forward arc to find out if he can still take marks and convert majors from them.

Brodie Grundy (11 disposals @64%, 223 metres gained, 3 contested possessions, 8 uncontested possessions, 2 intercept possessions, 43 hit-outs, 7 kicks, 4 handballs, 5 marks, 2 Contested Marks, 2 Marks Inside 50, 2 tackles, 3 score involvements, 2 Inside 50s & 1 goal) had a very pedestrian half of footy in the first two quarters, before winning a significant amount of taps in the second half that unfortunately did not go to advantage.

John Noble (25 disposals @ 72%, 414 metres gained, 2 contested possessions, 23 uncontested possessions, 5 intercept possessions, 13 kicks, 12 handballs, 7 marks, 3 tackles, 2 Inside 50s & 4 Rebound 50s) found some form with a solid performance, which was his best for the season. As well as he played, there were errors made, yet he did have mates with him that coughed the pill up too often.

Brayden Maynard (24 disposals @ 71%, 457 metres gained, 10 contested possessions, 14 uncontested possessions, 11 intercept possessions, 19 kicks, 5 handballs, 8 marks, 4 Contested Marks, 5 score involvements & 4 Inside 50s) was comfortable Collingwood's best and most-effective ball user from defence. The Woods looked threatening whenever Maynard gained possession.

Jack Crisp (20 disposals @ 80%, 357 metres gained, 6 contested possessions, 14 uncontested possessions, 4 intercept possessions, 11 kicks, 9 handballs, 3 marks, 4 tackles, 2 score involvements, 3 clearances, 3 stoppage clearances, 3 Inside 50s & 3 Rebound 50s) picked up his game markedly in the second half, after spending the first half in the midfield curtailing Nat Fyfe, before being moved off him in the last two quarters to provide daring attacks from defence.

Darcy Moore (19 disposals @ 90%, 336 metres gained, 7 contested possessions, 12 uncontested possessions, 13 intercept possessions, 9 kicks, 10 handballs, 7 marks, 3 score involvements, 3 Inside 50s & 4 Rebound 50s) played very well as Collingwood's main defender behind the ball, but he would feel responsible for costing his side 2 goals (the margin the Dockers won by) in the third term, which proved very decisive in the wash-up.

Jaidyn Stephenson (12 disposals @ 67%, 103 metres gained, 3 contested possessions, 9 uncontested possessions, 6 kicks, 6 handballs, 3 marks, 5 score involvements & 1 goal) finally kicked a goal for the first time since July 3 (his only goal put Collingwood in front before Three Quarter Time), however, his impact was minimal and was not able to get off the chain for most of the game.

Josh Daicos (12 disposals @ 75%, 168 metres gained, 5 contested possessions, 7 uncontested possessions, 3 intercept possessions, 5 kicks, 7 handballs, 3 marks, 2 tackles, 3 score involvements & 2 Inside 50s) had an average game without impacting the contest very often and frequently.

Darcy Cameron (11 disposals @ 73%, 165 metres gained, 7 contested possessions, 4 uncontested possessions, 4 intercept possessions, 8 hit-outs, 6 kicks, 5 handballs, 4 marks, 2 Contested Marks & 3 Inside 50s) won enough of the ball to be a threat, but could not impact the scoreboard adequately to give his side a viable option.

Brody Mihocek (11 disposals @ 73%, 206 metres gained, 7 contested possessions, 4 uncontested possessions, 2 intercept possessions, 7 kicks, 4 handballs, 2 marks, 3 score involvements, 3 Inside 50s & 1 goal) was not able to dominate the contest as he would've liked with a scarce number of marks taken, with only a solitary major on a flat evening for him.

Collingwood's next game will be against Sydney on August 6 at the Gabba. The Magpies will need to quickly rediscover winning form in Queensland, after producing two sub-par performances against the Eagles & Dockers which were downright crap and shit! A less than desired culmination to the club's stay in Perth after a promising start before the previous two matches. Time to capitalise on a depleted Swans line-up by stepping up to the plate over four quarters. If that doesn't happen, then I'm afraid nothing will.

Adz accumulates, but with little purpose at the moment.
Cameron actually posed a threat, but did not use the ball well enough when he got it
Agree with you re Jamie Elliott. The brilliant idea of playing him as a mid worked for 1 week, until all other AFL coaches saw it and took measures against it. Jamie should be playing forward where he can actually kick goals. If we don't have a mid to replace him, then that is an indictment.
Lack of cohesion between Grundy and mids has not in any way been addressed.

To put our season into perspective, we have just one more win that Fremantle, Sydney, North Melbourne and Melbourne. And u fortunately, we can no longer play the ‘tough draw’ card, cos we just lost to the 17th team. And we still have Port and Brisbane to play.

Whichever way you look at it, we stink.

I don’t get how people aren’t seeing the long term game being played
At the selection table we gambled resting players thinking we had enough to best Freo
On exposed form we should have had way to much for Freo but it was our mental attitude again which failed us miserably
Moving forward we need clarity in selection and clarity in game planning
Things that can’t happen again going forward
Josh Thomas isn’t a AFL caliber footballer and can’t be selected again
John Noble doesn’t have the composure or skill or body position awareness to play AFL
Treloar needs to work on his general field kicking it’s a massive flop for someone getting so much of the ball as he does and wasting it
Sidey can’t drift in and out of games. His first half was horrible but his second was more of what it should be
Roughead gets selected every week no matter what. Not having him created a massive imbalance in our defence
Crisp is either a defender or a midfielder. Pick one and let him concentrate on that his mind looks muddled
Decide on a back 6 and stick to it. Roughead Moore Maynard Crisp IQ should be locks every week. Scharenberg makes the logical sense as the Howe replacement. Play him and let him develop some team unity with the other defenders and don’t make the same mistake we made against the eagles and play the handing over of players. Give them there opponent and they stick to them
Is Stephenson and forward winger mid or HBF ? Our forward line needs work and at least he can kick goals and apply forward pressure. Play him forward and leave him deep
The jury is out on C. Brown and Daicos. They show some ability mixed with too many moments of panic
What’s wrong with Tyler Brown ? Select him and let him develop he was ok over the first few weeks. He won’t get better not playing senior footy
Is Cameron really better than Cox ? Doesn’t get the ball to ground as much and doesn’t have the same physical presence.

Other then Pendles snd JDG there isn’t anyone missing that is going to make a big difference to the side if selected
Anyone who mentions Reid or Langdon as coming back into the senior side needs to have there membership canceled and checked in for a mental health assessment
Langdon’s knee is shot and he can’t be relied upon to make it through a game. His now played 40 minutes of scratch match footy in 14 months and by all reports still can’t play more than 10/15 minutes at a time without needing his knee checked out again.
He was so slow before the last knee injury it was scary I would hate to see how much slower he is now. In these times of shorter quarters and more emphasis on field kicking and transition footy he is the last player you want or need. He would be the worst kick on the clubs list by a long way. People seem to forget this is a player who kicks at 22% eff over 20m or more and loses over 63% of one on one contests over his career
Reid’s inability to be able to string more than 2 games together says everything. At his best he was a AA level defender but we have Moore now the future. Up forward his less than effective and couldn’t play in front of either Cox or Cameron. I feel for Reid his body has just let him down.

Maybe greenwood gets back this season but he isn’t the answer to any startling question either

What we have is what we have and when you take pendles and JDG away it exposes some massive holes in our plans and others players ability to lift there own game

Glad I didn't watch, knew that we'd lose and get reamed by the umps. Bux and Eddie can go and rebuild the list around a key forward and players that can actually kick the ball and tackle. This game plan stinks to high heaven and we can't even beat Freo without Walters

The game wasn't nearly as bad as some here are Henny Pennying about.
Crisp I thought was returning to better form and Maynard made some great plays.
I also liked Keane for a first outing. Besides the push in the back I liked his game.
I think maybe we made too many changes as selection at one hit - although there were some that were calling for more. The balance of playing a settled side is as important as rotating, blooding or balancing injury.

Looking forward to the next game in a pretty even season.
