Okay, so we can't offload 15 under these modern day player list arrangements and when you're a finals regular, high draft picks can be difficult to attain. All that aside, all clubs have five levers to access new talent:
1. National & Pre-season Draft
2. NGA Academies
3. Father Son
4. Free Agency
5. Trade Period
If we work off the assumption that we finish 4th at season end (optimistic or pessimistic depending on your viewpoint), then our:
Indicative Draft Picks are: 15, 33 (linked to St Kilda finishing spot), 51, 69, 87
NGA Academy: Reef McInnes from Oakleigh Chargers shall be selected and most likely bid on by rival clubs forcing us to hand over our pick 15.
Father Son: none this year. Hello Nick Daicos in 2021.
Free Agency: the easiest currency to secure players for free however can inhibit the salary cap when snaring. Some players that fit our needs and are available include:
* Joe Daniher: injury prone but as Anzac Day 2019 proved his upside is unbelievable
* Mason Wood: perplexing form slump from this mobile 192cm utility. Fresh start perhaps.
* Jeremy Cameron: $$$$. Dreaming I know.
* Isaac Smith: better than Tom Phillips
* Zac Williams: shall be squeezed out of GWS salary cap. Must have been playing on under's for years. Killed us in Preliminary Final last year.
Trade Period:
* Brayden Fiorini: Quality Gold Coast mid squeezed out of selection at moment who is out of contract and a Melbourne lad.
* Harry Perryman: gun versatile utility from GWS who could be offered a deal GWS cannot match given their high end deals and salary cap pressure.
* Jeremy Finlayson: quality forward who kills us every time
* Jayden Hunt: might look better than he actually is but has speed and flair.
* Ben Brown: solves a need
* Peter Wright: solves a need
* Tom Papley: homesick but likely to be too pricey.
The machinations of pulling one, two and/three are always difficult but we need to as a club be bold, innovative and not be afraid to lose a top 10 player on our list to have a net gain. _________________ I love the Pies, hate Carlscum |

Pies couldn't afford Papley or Williams or Cameron or Perryman.
Phillips-Hunt swap could be possible.
The rest - unless you could get in PSD, wouldn't touch. |

Jeremy Fin-Lace-Out would be a good pick up.
But aren't we going to be under salary cap pressure trying to keep Moore and De Goey after Grundy's big contract? _________________ The beatings will continue until moral improves. |

Think our salary cap squeeze isn't as profound as made out. Surely the imminent and likely departures of:
* Langdon
* Beams
* Dunn
* Varcoe
* Reid
* Greenwood
* Broomhead
* Appleby
shall create some salary cap room combined with tradeable options such as:
* Sier
* Cox
* Phillips etc... _________________ I love the Pies, hate Carlscum |

Seemed Tom Phillips flatly rejected the Pies push to trade him to Geelong. I get the feeling Bux doesn't rate him and has preferred Daicos as the starting winger this year. _________________ I love the Pies, hate Carlscum |

Broomhead and Appleby will make zero difference to our salary cap as both would be on minimum and two out two in on minimum equals no change to salary cap. Not sure all the others mentioned are on big coin. _________________ Carlscum 120 years being cheating scum |

* Mason Wood: worth considering indeed
* Jeremy Cameron: Geelong and their bottomless salary cap say Hi!
* Isaac Smith: can't see him leaving whoreks
* Zac Williams: shall be squeezed out of GWS salary cap? You sure?

* Brayden Fiorini: In Gold Coast leadership group and still squeezed out of selection. Another Pies fan as a kid, but sadly a plodder on the field.
* Harry Perryman: poachable or not? Hmmm....
* Jeremy Finlayson: antagonistic turd who deserves a punch in the teeth each quarter he takes to the field against us
* Jayden Hunt: has Magpie bloodline and dash; grab if available
* Ben Brown: this idea reeks of Beams V2.1; sorry to say
* Peter Wright: solves a need indeed; great posts in other thread
* Tom Papley: likely to be too pricey, but wipes the floor compared to most of our flat footed plodding forwards.

It may very well demand a brutal, borderline ritualistic sacrifice to pull one or more of these off; doubt they can be done on picks alone.

I am also not sure that all on the top list will go at the end of this year. It is a risk in doing too large a list clean in one year as it can create instability we too many new faces coming in. Can lead to a massive slide down the ladder. Imagine eight or ten new players trying to learn a game plan in one pre-season.
I will also add the likes of Sier, Cox and Phillips trade value woud be next to nothing. Third rounders at best...Phillips maybe a late second round and if it came to that ot would be preferable to keep him. _________________ "To know nothing of events before your birth, is to forever remain a child" - Cicero (Roman Lawyer/Senator) 46 BCE. |

I reckon its time we got a couple of aboriginal players, like that Kelly of the weagles, that type, we have not had an indigenous star since Leon Davis have we ? I cant recall one, anyway, now i reckon we need a couple. _________________ Poverty exists not because we cannot feed the poor, but because we cannot satisfy the rich.

We do lack a certain flare. It coud just be this season. We have to get better at scoring. Great opportunity this week. _________________ "To know nothing of events before your birth, is to forever remain a child" - Cicero (Roman Lawyer/Senator) 46 BCE. |

Yep, Geelong were keen and Tom has had a pattern of squeezing the club financially come contract time twice now. For a pick 58, he has far exceeded the investment the club and provided good returns. The issue is that he has most likely peaked and his position is somewhat easily replaced. Additionally, when you have the Captain, JDG and Moore coming out of contract, the middle tier are the ones that come under list retention scrutiny (Hello James Aish). _________________ I love the Pies, hate Carlscum |

Looking at 2020 Free Agents:
*Andrew Gaff. 28, and super unlikely to leave for the Pies.
*Mason Wood. 26, only if we cannot find another forward option.
*Brad Crouch. 26, demanding too much money.
*Joe Daniher. 26, demanding too much money and wants out of a big club. Injury concerns too.
*Jeremy Cameron. 27, would be perfect, but we simply can't afford.
*Zac Williams. 25, would be great, doubtful we can afford.
*Jack Viney, isn't high for priority and will remain at Dees anyway.
I think Wood is the only realistic FA we can go for. But I wouldnt say he's the player that makes us a top 4 team again.
Looking at 2021 Free Agents:
* Matt Crouch, Rory Laird, Brodie Smith - Crows could trade out some players. But anyone good?
* Dayne Zorko - Wont leave Brissy.
* Patrick Cripps - Would be prefect, but won't leave Blues. Slight chance of WA return.
* Orazio Fantasia, Zach Merrett - Not what we need.
* Josh Kelly - On a billion dollars.
* Max Gawn - Not necessary with Grundy around.
* Dom Sheed - Ha, could you imagine?
* Marcus Bontempelli - Wont leave the Dogs.
Can't see us making an early play for one of these guys. Filtering through the Crows list and there could be someone in there, but its not overly promising.
Thinking about realistic trade targets:
Jake Kelly - If doesn't cost a lot, why not? Better version of Scharenberg?
Peter Wright - Tall Forward we could use and get a lot cheaper.
Ben Brown - I've gone right off this idea.
Unrealistic trade targets:
Oliver Wines - Is an upgrade on Sier/Wills. But too tough a trade and too high of a contract. Bombers circling.
Tom Papley - Dealing with the Swans... no thanks.
Ed Richards - Maybe in a few more years?
Freeing up money:
Mayne and Levi have expiring contracts. Both stay, but it will be on a lower wage, Levi may even go onto the rookie list?
*Edit: Mayne resigned before round 1.
Beams will be gone.
Dunn and Reid may retire. Varcoe another year older too. Langdon who knows?
Essendon have circled Sier. I'd much rather keep though.
Broomy is in danger of being delisted.
One of Cox, Lynch, Madgen, Wills might need to move on if we find better options.
A few players may be due for a pay rise and JDG and Moore obviously need to be signed. So there's a bit of work to do.
After all that:
I cant see us getting heavily involved in trade talks. And I cant see us getting too involved in free agency either. Unless we free up a lot of money somewhere? Inquire about all the FA's that suit a need, but if we're out of the race, just try a trade for Wright or think about Mason Wood.
God, I wish we had one of the King twins. Or Both. _________________ A Goal Saved Is 2 Goals Earned!
