As long as he is a free agent, and is given a performance based contract.
Only then should he be considered. |
I ask two questions when players become available. 1. Have they got the capacity to improve themselves and 2. Will their inclusion improve the team?
My answers are 1. Unknown but probably not and 2. Only if he plays at his optimum level for a consistent period of the season. This is a possibility if our game plan is able to be put into practice unlike our inability to do this at present due to not being able to cope with an incredibly high level of pressure applied by a good opponent. Many blinders required from Brown throughout the season. I doubt he is capable of producing this in a demanding season. I feel that drafting a young forward who can be taught the ropes would benefit us more in the future. That might mean building process for the team over time but I question whether Collingwood will be prepared to do this in the short term and forfeiting an instant remedy. _________________ Don't confuse your current path with your final destination. He is not a free agent. But I dont think a trade will be difficult.
Is this starting to sound like we've picked the FF we want? When looking around at who is available, we may have no other choice. But we will need to look again within a couple of seasons when he hits 30. (Draft one now and persist with Will Kelly). _________________ A Goal Saved Is 2 Goals Earned! |

Fact is, our forward line at present is not worth a burnt piece of toast, and Ben Brown could only spark it up a fair bit. Just saying. _________________ Poverty exists not because we cannot feed the poor, but because we cannot satisfy the rich.

As others have said, Ben Brown's strength (lead, mark, kick) do not fit with our current game style of drop it on the head of forward x and bring it to ground with some predictability and advantage for our small forwards.
When our forward line was actually functioning last season the one prior, there was plenty of space for our myriad small/medium marking targets to run into and either beat their opponent in a footrace, or beat them with strength (positioning) in the contest. This iteration of our forward line is yet to present this season.
If the space creating forward line where to be reestablished, there may be a place for Ben Brown, but if not, an option that can take a pack contested mark or bring the ball to ground in a predictable way for others would be far better. Out of those rumoured to be available, my guy would be Peter Wright, but I don't make decisions (that's left for the wife). |

On this year's performance BB is behind a few.
Taylor walker has had a better year statistically - I rate him much higher than Brown. Would be cheaper and he is more versatile. |

The reasons for our below expectation season are, in my view:
1- Injuries
2- Coaching decisions
3- Questionable selections.
4- Soft in the belly midfield
5- Lack of clearance capability
5- Dysfunctional forwards
Injuries stem from medical treatment and bad luck, hope 2021 is better
Some coaches must be let go and TOP GUN midfield coach found
Points 4-6 need to be addressed by recruitment.
The Beams situation must be finalized
Injury prone players need to be released (Scharenberg, Langdon, Reid)
Under performing players with a limited improvement factor due to age or talent must go. (Varcoe, Wills, Greenwood)
Those who have gone backwards this year and who have some currency should be traded and include
Sier
Stephenson
Phillips
Hoskin-Elliott
Cox
Fringe players to be reviewed to accommodate the yet to be released new list size
The positions I believe that must be recruited
Tall Full Forward
Gun Clearance Mid
Half Forward (25 + goals per year)
Replacement for Roughead/Magden
A new generation Scott Pendlebury (impossible I know, could be Mc Iness)
My 2021 Grand Final team would be
Maynard Moore Noble
Quaynor Roughead Howe
Grundy Pendles Adams
Treloar TBA Elliott
Sidebottom Mihocek Daicos
TBA De Goey TBA
McIness, T Brown, TBA, Kelly |

I read somewhere that last year Brown was on a contract providing $500k for each of last season and this season. He was coming off three 60 goal seasons so knocked back North's offer of 3 more seasons at $750k per year. North subsequently retracted the offer and have told him they want to trade him. In terms of trade value North have reduced their hand by making it known they want him out but something would still have to be offered by another club in trade or he will end up in the draft. Brown has very little bargaining power so he will either go to a club that he is happy with (for probably less than $500k) or be forced into the draft or retire.
North's attitude seems strange though and makes me wonder whether they know something that the rest don't. If they are rebuilding I would assume they would want to sell one of their assets for the best price possible. That would mean having it exposed and enhancing its reputation so they could do a good deal. Instead, they have not used the asset and said they just don't want it. They've driven the value down. |

Excellent idea but who do you suggest? _________________ Don't confuse your current path with your final destination. Just because it's dark and stormy now doesn't meant that you aren't headed for glorious sunshine! |

Trade out someone to get into the draft early and pick up Logan McDonald.
Or go for Peter Wright from the Suns or Darcy Fogarty from the Crows. |

Re Jack Gunston ~ if we believe we're still in a Premiership window over the next 3 years he'd be a great replacement for Hoskin-Elliott.
While last year WHE signed an extension taking him through until the end of 2022, I'd trade him out in a heartbeat.
Gunston is durable and would be an upgrade in height, weight and class and a more accurate kick. Would be a great mentor to Will Kelly.
Trade out Phillips and WHE for points and give the Hawks a 2nd round pick.
Trouble being I'd expect he'd command a 3 year deal of around $1.5m post rolling off a 3 year $2m deal with the Hawks. Not ideal in an already opaque TPP pool, list sizes and several key players to re-sign. _________________ "The Club's not Jock, Ted and Gerry" (& Eddie)

Nothing like having an opinion based on part of the facts.
He played under a knee injury cloud for most of the year and his wife had a miscarriage. He was top 3 in the coleman for the previous 4 years.... _________________ "You must be a parking ticket, cuz you got fine written all over you" Glen Quagmire |

Is it possible we go for two forwards?
Could we trade for Gunston and Brown? Does that work? Will they work together?
At age 28 and 29, we'd need to push for the flag in the next two seasons, otherwise we're back at square one. _________________ A Goal Saved Is 2 Goals Earned! |
