Suicide rates during the pandemic remained unchanged. Here’s what we can learn from that.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2020/10/21/suicide-rates-pandemic-unchanged/

"Suicide rates in Massachusetts neither rose nor fell last spring. Suicide rates did not change from expected rates at all.

Just to be sure, we performed what researchers call a sensitivity analysis — a fancy way of saying we asked the same question in a number of ways to make sure we were not deluding ourselves. We compared this year’s rates in March, April and May with those from last year and other years.

Whether we considered the months individually or combined, year by year, there was just no change. We ran the numbers again, this time assuming that each of the few dozen deaths in 2020 that occurred during March through May in which the cause of death was yet to be determined were in fact suicides. The scenario was unlikely, but one we had to consider. No matter how we looked, we kept finding the same thing. Suicide rates did not budge during the stay-at-home advisory period (March 23 until a phased reopening began in late May) in Massachusetts, which had one of the longest such periods of any state in the nation."

In the US...

The coronavirus pandemic has caused nearly 300,000 more deaths than expected in a typical year

https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/coronavirus-excess-deaths/2020/10/20/1e1d77c6-12e1-11eb-ba42-ec6a580836ed_story.html

"The CDC said the novel coronavirus, which causes covid-19, has taken a disproportionate toll on Latinos and Blacks, as previous analyses have noted. But the CDC also found, surprisingly, that it has struck 25- to 44-year-olds very hard: Their “excess death” rate is up 26.5 percent over previous years, the largest change for any age group.
...

The United States is in the midst of another sharp increase in coronavirus infections, this one centered in the upper Midwest and Plains states. The seven-day rolling average of cases, considered the most accurate barometer, is near 60,000 per day. ...

The new CDC data covers Feb. 1 to Oct. 3. Woolf said the total is likely to reach 400,000 by the end of the year.
...

For Whites, that means an excess death rate of 11.9 percent over a normal year. For Latinos, it is 53.6 percent, for Blacks 32.9 percent and for Asians 36.6 percent."

For all those Andrews-knockers - and indeed the Morrison-knockers like me - yesterday the UK recorded roughly the same number of Covid cases in a single day as the whole of Australian has recorded ever.

OK, the UK has more than double our population, just the same, it is an incredible disgrace, particularly when you remember that it has all the same natural advantages of being an island, plus a much better health care system.

France has similar numbers too.

Just to add some context to that, the northern hemisphere has just came out of summer and is heading into winter, when these type of viruses typically thrive. Summer was their chance to knock this on the head.

To further magnify that, 20k of the 27k cases in Australia were Victorian, as has been 800 of the 900 deaths. Without Victoria's hotel quarantine fueled contribution the comparison between Australia and the UK would be even starker.

As a country we should be looking to have zero active cases in the community, with the only cases being new arrivals from overseas, by the end of summer while at the same time much of the northern hemisphere will be in extremely deep fecal matter.

6 new cases today after reclassification. Total number of active cases down only slightly to 105.

Where are you pulling 6 from? All I've seen is 5.

The "reclassified" or corrected number is the net increase in cases reported on a given day (second row down on the right-hand side), taking into account false negatives/positives from previous days. That’s the key number for assessing weekly/fortnightly averages, as I understand it.

Fairy Nuff, I usually just go with what's in media and DHHS.

Leaving out the reclassification, that's only 6 locally acquired cases in Australia in the past 24 hours.

NSW had 7 cases but 6 of those are from overseas (they're doing the hotel quarantine for half the country it seems) and Canberra had 1 case which was also from overseas.

I just watched doctor Phil, one doc in particular said we need to lockdown everything for 30 days. No exceptions, this thing is almost to the point where we are doomed, one woman said she wants her kids at school, but teachers are too lazy to do the extra work - she should look in the mirror, the guy in charge of education in Florida does not want schools open unless they get assistance, it’s being mandated schools must open, but they are not getting any PPE or funding to set up safely. He said 43,000 teenagers in Florida are, or have been infected. And one woman only got upset when it was compared with an active shooter in schools! That was the lazy bitch! The doc said there is an alternative, we need to take it, online education. Eye opening show.

They're trying to use it as an excuse but it certainly isn't valid. This kind of thing is what I keep fearing will keep us locked away longer. Fine them as much as possible!

Or maybe check WTF DHHS are doing?

Quote:
A communication mix-up may have led a COVID-19 outbreak to spread further through Melbourne‘s northern suburbs.

Victoria’s deputy chief health officer Allen Cheng confirmed members of a family appeared to have left quarantine before their 14-day confinement had ended, potentially spreading the virus to two schools wider community.

But rather than ignoring the directions of health authorities and deliberately leaving quarantine early, Prof Cheng said a communication mix-up between DHHS and the family appeared to have occurred.

Although DHHS had informed at least one member of the family they could leave isolation because they had now cleared the virus, Prof Cheng said it appeared the family mistakenly thought it meant all of them were now free to re-enter the community.

^ If so, sounds like the family members have copped a lot of unwarranted vitriol.

No they misunderstood what they were being told. They didn’t check, they assumed. Vitriol well placed and deserved.

If you’re unsure ask. Don’t go to a friggin’ populated place like a school. It is not difficult.
