Back on that Archibald Prize-winning painting, I found this line from a review amusing:

https://www.smh.com.au/culture/art-and-design/why-this-year-s-archibald-prize-winner-wasn-t-a-surprise-20200925-p55zcn.html

Quote:
This double portrait of the artist clasping hands with footballer Adam Goodes may be too loosely painted for those who insist on near-photographic precision, but it's a sincere and likeable image.

I was just reading some old footy stats and was reminded that Dermott Brereton kicked eight goals in the 1985 Grand Final which Hawthorn lost to Essendon by 78 points Shocked

Errrrrrr,

Police in Vietnam have confiscated an estimated 345,000 used condoms which had been cleaned and resold as new, state media reported.

How does someone go about collecting 300,000 used condoms in the first place? Shocked

Sara Lee is more to my liking. Her Dad Bing and brother Darrell aren't too bad either.

"Eskimo" has been considered an offensive term by Inuit people for decades, so hardly surprising.

Wonder when the word Asian will be deemed offensive and we will have to use Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, etc. instead,

yes to Inuits its offensive:
i googled the sentence, the wiki one put me to sleep

"People in many parts of the Arctic consider Eskimo a derogatory term because it was widely used by racist, non-native colonizers. Many people also thought it meant eater of raw meat, which connoted barbarism and violence."

Apparently in Alaska they dont see it that way, its more a Canadian thing. In Alaska though, they dont like the word explore or discover, because that sounds like the place was empty, but it want, the indigenous people were always there.

Though I got to say while I was in Alaska i didnt feel the need to label anyone, people, they are just people.

I never ask anyone what nationality or "breed' they are, asking wow love your accent, where are you from? is a lot more friendly!

Changing the name is no biggie, just like with the Redskins, and the lollies with the same name, to me its a no brainer, why make people feel uncomfortable, sad, or upset if you dont need to?

It's not quite the same, but I think there are already contexts where it probably already is (i.e. introducing someone speaking as "an Asian" rather than specifying where they actually come from, the implication being that all Asians are the same etc.). Context, as always, is a good guide.

Oh, my partner hates being asked where she's from on account of her accent, lol. Not everybody does, though, to be fair, and I agree with you that the way you put it is way more polite than the way some people ask it.

(I've explained to her that most people only ask it either out of friendly curiosity or for the sake of small-talk, and are not meaning to be impolite. But I do understand also that if you get asked the question all the time, it can serve as a reminder that you're different or don't belong.)

I think this is a good rule of thumb. Ultimately it's only a brand name and, even just from a basic marketing standpoint, it makes sense to change it if it makes people unhappy.
