No votes for Pendles. Strange.

It was another funny game, in which it was difficult to pick bests. I thought that Sidebottom and Grundy were standouts. I didn't think so much of Adams' game but understand why he would get votes (and acknowledge that plenty of seasoned watchers on Nick's thought highly of his efforts). Maynard I can see - I thought about giving him a vote. Mihocek and Moore must have been given votes for implementing some aspect of team structure - just watching their game, neither of them were standouts. The one that I thought might have got more attention is Daicos - he was very slick and cleaned up others' mess repeatedly in the third quarter when the rest of the team seemed to have gone AWOL. He also put his body on the line very courageously on a couple of occasions in some inspirational play.
As for Pendles, I was very frustrated early with his execution, which was well below his usual exquisite standard. Ultimately, I took the view that weight of possession and repeated impact meant he should be in the votes. Maybe the Coach(es) couldn't get past Pendles being a whisker below his usual fabulous standard.
All of that said, the coaches don't seem to have agreed on much, except that someone was second best on ground (I presume they list Sidebottom first for a 5 and a 3 and Adams second with two 4s but it could be the other way around, I guess). Then, either Grundy or Maynard was given a 5 and a 0 and the other a 3 and a 2, Darcy a 2 and a 0 and the 1s went to different players.
I guess that shows that these assessments are very subjective and even very experienced people involved in the system don't agree about who was "best" - or that the coaches don't pay much attention to the voting and just do it without thinking too hard about their votes - or (and I hope this is not right) the coaches aren't actually capable of consistently assessing who played the best on a particular day.
I suppose the good thing is that at least the coaches both know that no-one much from St Kilda had a major impact on the game. I presume Butler got a vote for being "lively" but he wouldn't have been in my top 5. |

Interesting thoughts, and I agree with most of them.
I also thought Daics really put in but how Mihocek voted ahead of Pendles is something of a mystery.
Checkers: 9 disposals and no tackles. Pendles: 26 disposals and 3 tackles. _________________ Donny.

Against Essendon, Grundy was the only Collingwood player to receive a vote. Grundy was also the lone Collingwood votegetter in the round 18 game last year against GWS. However, the round 15 game against North in 2019 was the last time that no Collingwood player (not even Grundy) received votes. |
