Apart from which, it does look from this distance as if people in the health industry will have gainful employment in the immediate future, so I’m not sure why footballers would feel the urge to put money aside to support hard-working nurses. Perhaps it is just more palatable than asking them to put aside money for homeless, unemployed former litigation solicitors?

Nope, I stand by my opinion. Quite a few players baulked and had their noses out of joint when it was suggested they might have to take a pay cut. Not all of them, but enough of them, and mostly the younger ones. Taking a small pay cut and missing 4 rounds isn't that hard.

Lethal Leigh Matthews throwing shade at the players now, asking captains to set the example and take a pay cut for the good of the game. Personally, it should start with the AFL execs right now.

80 per cent of AFL staff stood down without pay
By Michael Gleeson and Daniel Cherny
Up to 80 per cent of staff at the AFL and clubs have been stood down without pay as the league imposes austerity measures in the wake of the suspension and possible abandonment of the season due to the coronavirus.

The AFL has ordered that only a skeleton staff is to remain at the league headquarters and at every club, with between 70 and 80 per cent of staff immediately stood down without pay. Those who remain on the skeleton staff will have their pay cut.

So please, tell me how Gill and co are being so altruistic with their pay cuts?

Hopefully the media get asked to take a pay cut.
As an example for everyone else

Mark Robinson gets paid in bar tabs, so the lockdown's going to hurt him.

AFL players agree to 50% pay cut.

Gil and the Executives taking 20% cut and dropping bonuses.

^^^
The players'/AFLPA's offer is that for only the next couple of months, but of course if there's still no footy then who knows what'll happen:

Good on 'em! Won my respect back, and I hope they're using this to help the thousands of AFL and club staff who were stood down without pay. I'm sure many are helping each other, I personally know a few are.

Actually, it's not over yet. A small group of players (mostly managers I reckon) are still throwing hissy fits and refusing short term pain for long term gain. They need this hammered into their thick skulls -- some clubs won't survive this, they will fold or merge. It's not if, but when. They'll get paid now, but they might not have a club to pay for in six months.

Chris Scott has told Geelong he'll go without pay. Zero. None. Nada. I never really liked him, but now I have huge respect for him, sacrificing for the good of the club.
