Post subject: Darcy Cameron v. Mason CoxReply with quote

Mason turned 29 today and has kicked 71 goals from 58 matches. Darcy Cameron is the new kid on the block. Hard to see Bux selecting them both in the same forward line at the same time. Got the feeling it's crunch time for Mason in the first month of 2020. His historical highs are high and lows are the lowest. Some consistency would be appreciated.

Get the feeling Bux and Mason's tight relationship has given Mason some extra credits that haven't always been reciprocated. Maybe the competition with Darcy breathing down his neck shall be just the tonic for some increased urgency and consistency needed.

Over the Pre-Sesaon it be easily Cameron.

Was good in the 1st Marsh Game vs Richmond and BOG in the VFL Game vs Sandy.

Where Cox Kicked 2 Goals but outside of that done Nothing

Mason's stab kicking for goal that fails to go more than 35 metres is galling to see.

^ 71.34 = 68% accuracy

For reference, Elliot has 164.86 (66%), WHE 64%, Degoey 118.70 (63%), Stevo 62.37 (63%), Mihocek 65.44 (60%), Reid 59%

How many goals has Cameron kicked in how many AFL games?

If nothing else, Cameron’s addition to the list will keep Cox honest.
You want strong competition between the players and Cox had none last year.

The Cameron pick up is also some sort of insurance if Grundy isn’t available.
It means Cox can still remain in the forward line while Cameron attempts to replace Grundys abilities around the ground.
It was a smart acquisition by Collingwood, given that we were never going to pick up decent ruckman / forward anyway. If they were any good, they would go to a club that offers more opportunities.

Cox would be looking over his shoulder, Grundy not at all.

More telling would be where the kicks were kicked from.

Isn't it the role of a KPF to be front & centre?

More telling would be that amongst all current players there are only SIX who do better than 68% career accuracy, and only 1 of them (Tory Dickson) has significantly more goals than Mason

I'd say that's a pretty impressive achievement for a guy who hadn't played footy 6 years ago

Cox is the incumbent, Cameron is the wannabe. It's up to Cameron to force his way in.

Does that count those kicks that fail to make the distance. Like the one in the last 5 minutes of the 2018 Grand Final?

Because nobody else's kicks ever drop short or go OOF, and Mason alone lost us the 2018 flag

I'm just inferring what you implied

No the 68% doesn't include shots on goal that failed to register a score. Neither do the %ages for the other players I mentioned. I don't think Mason has a much higher no-score rate than average

That is a beautiful sentence that is worthy of attribution to a Winston Churchill or Groucho Marx

Cameron's role is first and foremost as a back-up for Grundy. Secondly, he is a potential back-up for Cox. He may one day be a replacement, but not this year. We got Darcy Cameron so we never have to watch Reid or Wills contesting knockouts in the future. If Dunn fully recovers, Roughead can relieve in the ruck but Roughy definitely played his best football at full back last year.

The wild card here is Max Lynch. After three years at the club he should have been the back-up rather than Cameron. I haven't seen enough VFL games to know if he is going to make it, but surely this is year that he has to make a significant impression.
