We have a problem Houston.
The virus is not going away it seems.
Sporting events are being cancelled all around the world.
The season kicks off in 2 weeks and the pandemic is growing.
People say they can cancel the crowd and play games in an empty stadium, but what happens if someone at the club gets the virus?
Will the club be locked down for 14 days and what happens with points?
What happens to the people who have advanced booking re Anzac game???
Will they get a refund if the crowd is banned?
Lets not argue about whether it is a beat up of a disease.
this season could be wrecked not by the disease but the offical response.
2020 season may end up in the garbage bin.

Australia has 68 cases and 3 deaths.

Italy had less than 10 cases two weeks ago, and then the number of cases escalated rapidly. There's nothing to suggest we're immune from this.

I want you to be right.

Football clubs would be wise to start getting their players, coaches and staff tested every 14 days to try and minimise the chances of mass infection.

You feel it's a genuine 50/50 chance that at some stage this year the season will be thrown into turmoil because of the coronavirus.

It's going to hit footy at some stage, either the teams or crowds. The players are healthy young men, the virus will be a mild cold to them. But it's the quarantine rules that will hurt. Might be like a sumo tournament in Japan this week, which went ahead but without a crowd at the venue. Imagine this:

ANZAC DAY
Collingwood 101 def. Essendon 99
Crowd attendance, 0.

ANZAC day crowd of 0......much like the last post..the whole game we can hear a pin drop...

Just the players yelling/talking......the coaches yelling lol will be interesting....they wont even be able to keep the quarter and three quarter time address secret! Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

will they still need a master of ceremony? "everyone please stand for...i mean players please stand....oh your already standing"

Attendance will now be counted in Seagulls! The AFL was delighted to announce that the match at Marvel between St.Kilda and the Western Bulldogs was attended by over 84 Seagulls ...this is actually higher then the last few seasons human attendance....Western Bulldogs have announced they plan to sign all seagulls to a season membership....chips will be accepted as payment....

We've been dealing with the Carltonovirus for years. It proved a much more virulent strain during the 80's and 90's however like most outbreaks it died down and new threats emerged, but the memory lingers. 1979 & 1981 particularly bad years...

Unless the number of active cases in Australia escalates dramatically (as it has recently in Italy) there is no reason why it should have a major impact on local sport. We'll just have to wait and see. Refunds on pre-booked ANZAC day tickets would be the least of my concerns

Bottom line, if you have flu-like symptoms, watch the game on TV

At least it would prevent Richmond from winning B2B flags

I don't see what the problem is here, just stop drinking the stuff and switch to an Aussie amber fluid instead.

It worked with the wine flu - I stopped drinking the stuff and it went away - and it can work with the Corona Virus.

Seriously though, some sanity must prevail. Toilet paper is not going to run out - just take care to wash your hands properly.

Coronavirus outbreak: AFL confirms plan to play without crowds if required

https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/afl-confirms-plan-to-play-without-crowds-if-required-20200310-p548p4.html

"But league chief Gillon McLachlan says games ... will go ahead as planned unless advice changes from the state and federal government.

The Andrews government indicated to the AFL on Tuesday it was “likely” that large public gatherings would be impacted at some stage in the future."

Collingwood issued a media statement that they have protocols in place to deal with the coronavirus. If it's anything like their soft tissue injury management, we're screwed!

Round 2 v Tigers could be behind closed doors is what I am hearing. Watch this space. Let's hope not, but there is a big chance the AFL will follow suit similar to ATP Indian Wells, Italian and English soccer, and major overseas music events.

Contact prohibited between players and fans tonight at our Season Launch event. Fair enough.

I heard it's round 4 or 5, but could be sooner if things escalate over the next week or two.

The AFL should be trying to negotiate increased TV coverage now, which could reduce the losses.
