Post subject: Matt Scharenberg talk to Chris Mayne | |
|
James Aish went down against the Tigers in about round 7, 2018 and Chris Mayne got the call up as a WING replacement. Having committed to a vegan lifestyle, a change in his aerobic base through a huge pre-season and an honest discussion with Bux, Chris Mayne has done a lazarus and rejuvenated a perilous career.
Matt Scharenberg wasn't put up for trade but was told we wouldn't stand in his way if other clubs were keen. Despite middling interest from the Kangaroos, they we went with Walker (toupee man) from Brisbane Lions. What's my point? Well, if someone told me that Chris Mayne would have the ability to:
* play on a wing
* run all day
* be capable of 14 tackles in a Grand Final
* play in a Grand Final
* maintain such form
* be an endurance beast
I would have put my house on the line saying no way. Matt Scharenberg may simply retire by mid year or year's end if he doesn't make some sort of "career intervention" for himself. As of today Matt's credentials are:
* Courageous
* elite intercepting and general mark
* good reader of the play
* solid kick
Conversely he is:
* slow
* injury prone
* currently "Positionally" limited
* in a queue behind: Madgen, Murphy, Keane, Moore, Howe, Roughead
* introverted
Am sure he has had discussions with the club about how he can rejuvenate his career but you get the feeling unless he can "reinvent" himself in a new position (eg. up forward) he is in dire straits. The lack of commentary on Nick's about Matt suggests most Pie fans have given up on him which is understandable. However the Chris Mayne resurgence says that anything is possible. _________________ I love the Pies, hate Carlscum |

general skills made a leap to better kicking and general field play

^ It's never too early to engage in exciting discussion about the future for the 12th-ranked backman on our list. |

The difference is Mayne had previous form (2012, 13, 14, 15 and 16). He recorded 10+ tackles six times when he was at Fremantle.
I consider his first few years at the Pies more of an aberration. He has now reverted to form. Mayne IS a very good footballer. _________________ Fighting against the objectification of woman. |
