And there’s Butler gone cheap. He looks to have bit of a technical weakness against bowling of any kind.

England 9/499 declared. SA 2/60 at Stumps on day 2. Pope made 135* for England. |

It’s funny how this works, isn’t it? 4/349 at Lunch on day 2 and it looks like careful batting on day 1 has set England up to win this Test, too. |
The pitches are too flat. It was a good toss to win. Something is wrong when so much depends on winning the toss. (And something is wrong when the new ball so often doesn't swing and seam.) This is not a justification after the fact. The moment the toss was decided, people were forecasting doom for S. Africa, just as the moment the toss was decided at the SCG, people were forecasting doom for NZ. Thankfully, there's at least awareness of this among commentators and fans outside of Nick's Sports Bar, though obviously not enough action.
I suspect the reason people in this forum don't want to acknowledge the obvious is that there is such a desire to maintain the Myth of Smith. Smith's success is a huge warning sign that all is not well in Test cricket.

Back on S. Africa-England... It's very possible that S. Africa are so weak now (look at the number of Tests their players have played) that just about any strategy will "work" in the sense of resulting in a win. That doesn't mean you used a good strategy. It's also true that just because there's a result does not mean that the pitch was okay. That's the kind of warped thinking that leads the powers that be who care only about money to push for 4-day Tests. On the other hand, England's batting is so weak that they can also be excused for trying different things. |

The English ex-players (Gough, Vaughan, Hussain) are not pleased by the suspension.
It did look like Rabada was pretty close to Root, though, even if he wasn't looking directly at him. |

Mark Ramprakash:
'"I have no idea whether Joe Root wanted me to continue," he says. "I think so highly of him - he was wonderful, searching for excellence with a tremendous work ethic. The England batsmen only needed to have their techniques tweaked. It is about how they think and how they practise. There is a tricky balance between wanting to build a trusting relationship and allowing a player to grow and have his own space.
"I listen to some coaches and cringe at the way they take ownership of a player's career when that player is successful. There are many influences - I had Mike Gatting and Desmond Haynes when I was playing for Middlesex. England players handle themselves so well now. But I wonder, could I have been more interventionist?"'

[Only need to have their techniques tweaked? Their techniques are abysmal. The problem is that it may be too late to fix once their in the Test side, so making large charges could be risky.] |

S. Africa 6/208 (82). Stumps, day 3.
Spinner Bess took the first five S. African wickets. How often has that been done?
Stokes dropped three catches. |

This could be interesting after the rain on day 3. There’s some prospect that England might feel they have to enforce the follow on to win.
Of course, while QdK is still at the crease (presently 63*), there’s just a chance the follow on decision will be made for them. |

S. Africa are following on.
S. Africa lost 4/1 in 23 balls, three of them bowled, to end their first innings. |

S. Africa probably need the entire last day to be rained out now.
Bess took (the first) five wickets in S. Africa's first innings.
Root has taken four wickets out of six in the second innings.
Weep for the current standard of Test cricket. |

All out 237. England by an innings and 53 runs, As with all 5 of the Australia Tests against Pakistan and New Zealand, one team batted well and the other wasn't up to the task. |

No, one team batted passably in the best conditions (read flat track). The other team didn't.
The last-wicket 99-run stand gave S. African fans something to cheer about, though. |
