Pretty sad story, but one that seems like it was entirely avoidable – and a situation that Baldwin is, as a producer on the film as well as an actor, in a roundabout way at least partially responsible for:

Very strange story. Similar to the Brandon Lee incident.

Do they really need to use real guns on a movie set?

Comes across as an Agatha Christie plot.

Seems like the assistant director is shaping up to be the main fall guy here:

https://www.theguardian.com/film/2021/oct/25/rust-assistant-director-who-gave-alec-baldwin-gun-was-subject-of-2019-safety-complaint

Personally, I hope that everyone who contributed to creating the unsafe set conditions – whether or not that includes Baldwin – is held accountable.

They have people who's job it is to check, and they shouldn't have any live ammo on set, period.

When I was 15 A mate was unloading his gun and somehow a slug was in the breach and it fired and I lost a kidney a spleen and very nearly my life. It was months before I could go to school and about a year before I could play any sort of sport. A gun is always loaded and never ever should be pointed at anyone if the intent is for show.

I just can't think why the armourer would have live rounds. The only person near the place who could justify could be a vet in case a horse breaks a leg.

I can see a massive lawsuit coming here.

Yeah, basically it seems like they have (and have for quite some time had) extensive protocols to ensure that something like this can't happen, and in this case a number of those protocols were either ignored or rushed through. That degree of recklessness would, I presume, amount to criminal negligence in this case, given the outcome.

I guess it'll be interesting to find out where the buck stops in this case. Assistant directors are notorious for being tyrants on set, but they're also, as the name suggests, acting under direct orders from above. Given what we know about the labour disputes on set and the conditions immediately preceding the accident – none of which can presumably be slated home to the 1AD – the people in charge of the productions' purse strings should have a lot of serious questions to answer.

It's now emerged that the armourer (i.e. the person specifically in charge of the guns on set), Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, was an inexperienced 24-year-old nepotism hire (her dad is a long-time Hollywood armourer).

https://nypost.com/2021/10/23/rust-armorer-hannah-gutierrez-reed-once-gave-unchecked-gun-to-child-actor/

What with everything else coming out about the labour conditions on set, this all just seems like one big parable about employment ethics, and why we need unions to keep employers in check.

geezus, that last comment is a leap isn't it?

Unions already have a big role in Hollywood. Lets wait and see what any inquest says, and calling the armourer a "nepotism hire" is also a stretch isn't it?

Did you wake up on the wrong side of the missus this morning? Razz
