Is this appointment based on sentimental amateurism? He doesn't have much managing experience, does he? Is this like the appointment of a certain AFL coach?

A. Smith, Evening Standard:

Even Chelsea boss Frank Lampard must wonder if he is up to the job at Stamford Bridge

"Although the real tests are still to come, chatter in the dressing room will have naturally centred on Lampard’s abilities as a training ground coach.

It is often said that footballers can sniff out a fraud from 50 yards. They can tell right away if their boss doesn’t have a firm grasp on the various challenges. And if they think that he doesn’t, respect quickly ebbs away.

From what I’ve heard, training has been a lot of fun so far, a sharp contrast from the arduous tactical and technical demands of Antonio Conte and Maurizio Sarri.

Initially, that will have come as a relief because training under the two Italians could be repetitive and laborious.

After a while, though, players will start to worry if they aren’t being schooled on their specific roles and those of the team as a whole.

Vastly experienced figures like Cesar Azpilicueta and Olivier Giroud will be looking to Frank for specialist guidance. That’s the task facing a manager with just one year in the Championship behind him.

Even he must wonder if the knowledge and nous are in place to lead such a big team."

Plenty of uncertainty with Frank, but there's a sense of unity among the supporter base to support him after last season's dysfunction with Sarri.

He will have time on his side. The inability to sign players due to the current transfer ban and the fact that he's a favourite son will help him. Most Chelsea supporters are not expecting silverware this season so they just want to see a competitive team every week and for Frank to blood some youngsters such as Callum Hudson-Odoi.

The sale of David Luiz to Arsenal is the first real evidence of Frank stamping his authority at the club as head coach. Let's hope he can get a few early wins on the board.

But it's not the supporter base that gets rid of managers at Chelsea, right? It's the owner, and it looks like he does it very frequently.

Yes, but Roman's commitment to Chelsea has arguably waned in recent years.

List of Chelsea managers in the Abramovich era:

1. Claudio Ranieri = 2000-2004 (sacked)
2. Jose Mourinho = 2004-2007 (sacked)
3. Avram Grant = 2007-2008 (sacked)
4. Luis Felipe Scolari = 2008-2009 (sacked)
5. Guus Hiddink = 2009 (temporary appointment)
6. Carlo Ancelotti = 2009-2011 (sacked)
7. Andre Villas Boas = 2011-2012 (sacked)
8. Roberto Di Matteo = 2012 (sacked)
9. Rafael Benitez = 2012-2013 (temporary appointment)
10. Jose Mourinho = 2013-2015 (sacked)
11. Guus Hiddink = 2015-2016 (temporary appointment)
12. Antonio Conte = 2016-2018 (sacked)
13. Maurizio Sarri = 2018-2019 (resigned)
14. Frank Lampard = 2019-Present

Ranieri = Decent manager and hired by Ken Bates (Chelsea's previous owner), but Roman was a never a supporter to begin with and he didn't win any trophies in his four years at the club

Mourinho (1) = Chelsea's greatest manager and won six trophies in his first stint. I was incredibly numb when he departed due to a falling out with Roman in 2007.

Grant = He was a temporary appointment until a good run of results meant he was appointed on a permanent basis. Never thought he was a good manager, as the players essentially coached themselves to a Champions League final, League Cup final and 2nd place finish in the EPL.

Scolari = He was highly regarded when he was first appointed and started off well, but things begun deteriorating in November 2008 and strained relations with several players meant he didn't last long. The club was right to terminate his employment.

Hiddink (1) = He was only a temporary appointment, but did an outstanding job in his first stint with us. A lot of supporters wanted him to be appointed permanently but he was too committed to his coaching duties with Russia at the time.

Ancelotti = Did an outstanding job in his first season winning the EPL and FA Cup double. Several players (Ballack, Carvalho, J Cole) departed at the start of his second season in charge and weren't adequately replaced. He was sacked in the Goodison Park dugout. Thought the way the club treated him was appalling.

Villas Boas = One of the youngest managers we ever had, but he was overwhelmed with the job and was never the right fit for us.

Di Matteo = Was AVB's #2 and became the caretaker manager. Somehow won the Champions League and FA Cup and was given the permanent job. Started the 2012/2013 season very well but started deteriorating slightly in his final month and was eventually sacked. The club's treatment of him always left me angry.

Benitez = Temporary replacement to Di Matteo. Highly unpopular with the supporters due to comments he made about our club from his days at Liverpool. It was a relief he wasn't a permanent manager.

Mourinho (2) = Not as a good as the first stint, but still did very well in his first two seasons before it all fell apart in his third season. Was bitterly disappointed the club didn't stick with him through his darkest hour.

Hiddink (2) = Caretaker appointment and the club's form improved slightly after Mourinho's departure, but he was a shadow of his first stint. It was a matter of just playing the season out as best as we could.

Conte = Along with Mourinho, he was my favourite manager of the Abramovich era. I loved his passion and charisma. He lifted the club out of the doldrums of 10th spot and won the title in his first season. Problems emerged in his second season and he was sacked at the end of his 2nd season in charge. I thought it was the wrong decision by the club.

Sarri = I wasn't a fan of Sarri and the brand of football he implemented, but I can appreciate the good work he did to secure a CL spot and win us the Europa League. When he resigned, I wasn't too bothered by his departure.

Wrong decision to sack:
- Mourinho (2007)
- Ancelotti (2011)
- Di Matteo (2012)
- Mourinho (2015)
- Conte (2018)

Correct decision to sack:
- Ranieri (2004)
- Grant (2008)
- Scolari (2009)
- Villas Boas (2012)

Can't disagree with you there.

It's been tiresome over the years. Most supporters have been crying out for some stability so we are hoping that Frank can provide that for us.

We've won plenty of silverware in spite of it, but I don't think it's going to help us long-term. We need to adopt a long-term approach akin to Manchester City and Liverpool with Pep and Klopp respectively.

The scoreline says we were "clobbered", but anyone watching the match would have seen that we played far better than the scoreline suggested.

We should have won on Wednesday against Liverpool in the Super Cup, and we need to beat Leicester City to get some much needed confidence and belief in the playing group.

We're not far off. We're one good striker and competent centre back away from being a top 4 side in my opinion.

Hmm... This sounds like what people say about the Pies. Does Chelsea at least have semi-competent strength & conditioning and medical staff? (I got the feeling last season that Tottenham had all the injuries.)

Chelsea's injury list has always been fairly conventional. We get a few injuries like all clubs but nothing that stands out like a sore thumb.

Problem facing Chelsea is the inability to utilise the transfer market until next summer, so I expect ups and downs along the way but I've been encouraged by the style of football we're playing under Frank so far. I'm enjoying it more than I did when Sarri was head coach.

We just need to start winning soon so the players continue believing in Frank's philosophy and tactics.

"Chelsea are following developments at Manchester City with interest after the Premier League champions avoided a transfer ban for breaching rules on under-18 signings, Sky Sports News understands.

City were fined £315,000 on Tuesday, but were not given a transfer ban after FIFA revealed their admission of responsibility was a factor in determining their punishment.

Chelsea meanwhile were handed a one-year transfer ban and fined more than £460,000 in February, and are currently in the process of challenging their sanction to the Court of Arbitration for Sport."

"... Sheffield United came back to draw 2-2 at Chelsea...

Promoted Sheffield United came from 2-0 down to stun Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. ...

The collapse leaves new Chelsea manager Frank Lampard still seeking his first home win."
