Our old faithful kitchen timer died the other day. It's just a simple clockwork one-hour timer, shaped like a chook.
It looks like this:
We were sad, it's been part of the family for many years.
Naturally, I jumped on the computer and went hunting for another one, ideally one as similar as possible. Obviously we could get all sorts of up-to-the-moment high-tech mega-tech timers accurate to the microsecond, but why? That sort of precision is what telephones and computers are for. We like our old chook.
Sure enough, I found something. Curiously enough, it wasn't one rather like the old one, it was exactly the same. What's more, I found this exact same kitchen timer on sale at a wide range of different places.
There were several places asking 30-odd dollars for it, plus the usual range of Amazon hopefulls asking $5 or $10 for the timer and $25 for freight.
I found it on E-bay for $6.69 US ($9.64 AUD) with free shipping from China, and $9.99 USD ($14.31 AUD) from an Amozon reseller in the USA with reasonable freight charges
I actually paid $2.07 USD ($2.96 AUD) plus $2.00 US freight from China using Ali Express.
But the Ultimate Massive Shameful Rip-Off Award goes to fishpond.com.au who do offer free shipping Australia wide, but are asking - for this exact same plastic kitchen timer - a brain-numbing $55.37 AUD. It costs less than $3 in China, and they are adding an 1871% markup. Yes, you read that right, getting on for a two thousand percent markup.

Cute and yes that's a massive rip off.
I don't use timers in the kitchen, just the clock.
For something that goes in the oven I just note what time it went in and remember what time to take it out, stuff in the pan just the clock plus look and feel. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

Actually, I find cooking without a timer is quite straightforward.
Very simple really. When you can't see the wall clock because the kitchen has filled up with thick smoke, take the roast out thirty minutes earlier. _________________ Let's eat Grandma. Commas save lives! |
