I think many of you misunderstand the concept. A whipping boy is one we blame, come what may, for everyone else’s shortcomings. Blair certainly was unfairly criticised but a number of the other guys mentioned in this thread were actually just bad footballers who received their fair share of criticism because they did more than their fair share of unhelpful things on the field.

The only possible candidate in the present lineup is Langdon. It doesn’t matter how many games he plays in a row, which players he is selected before or how many times he takes more marks than other Collingwood defender, all-time, in a preliminary final, it’s going to be his personal responsibility every time the opposition scores a goal. Moreover, Tommy is a proper whipping boy, because the better he gets and the harder he tries, the more people complain about him.

I feel like Phillips fits into the category of being a whipping boy to some of our supporters.

I've been a consistent fan of his, but he's been criticised over the journey.

With the decision to not select Greenwood (who takes a known A grader) out

Does he make the short list. Not for mine but we all have our own opinions

I guess some fans will continue to unfairly criticise Langdon and Phillips.

I admit to being guilty of being overly critical of Travis Cloke in his final years.....but only after he publicly toyed with the prospect of joining the scum. In retrospect, I should have ignored that, knowing that he wasn't the sharpest tool in the box. Rolling Eyes

Not for me either. Greenwood is the meat in the Pies' sandwich.

Not really a whipping boy, but my whipping limb is Tom Phillips' right foot and it's made multiple appearances and it's only round one. At least it's better than Woewodin's, oh wait I never even saw that!

I f Phillips learns to kick and or handball to advantage he will lose the tag. 22 possessions tonight and about 4 effective.

The real measure of a proper whipping boy is if they cop it constantly when other people don't. If Blair had played a 2 kick, 7 handball game, there would have been 14 dedicated threads about it. Varcoe does that and - because we think he's OK - there is virtually no comment.

Quaynor's really been a disappointment so far in his career.
