No Adz, the GWS midfield mauled Grundy, not Mumford. Mumford was just a thug who gave away half a dozen free kicks and was only there to rough up Grundy so our mids couldn't capitalise. |

Herald Sun article by Sam Mitchell:
The article below is on the Herald sun website, and is Sam Mitchell's analysis of Brodie Grundy's performance yesterday:
Giants veteran Shane Mumford had the mountainous task of containing All-Australian ruckman Brodie Grundy on the big stage.
While Grundy had the upper hand on the stats sheet, the Pies ultimately failed to capitalise on the miss-match.
Grundy dominated the ruck duel winning 73 hit-outs — his highest tally for the season — to Mumford’s 14 yet GWS led the clearance count 54-35.
Four-time premiership Hawk Sam Mitchell believes Grundy wasn’t creative enough with his tapwork, saying he often took the safe option in his side’s shattering loss.
“Statistically I know Grundy had 70 hit-outs or something like that but they lost clearances by 20 so there’s no actual point having a hitout if you don’t win the clearances,” Mitchell said on Channel 7’s Game Day.
“(Grundy) didn’t grab it out of the ruck, he didn’t knock it to the outside except for a couple of times in the last quarter,”
“Other than that, he just did the simple thing, he didn’t try to get creative.”
he Brownlow Medallist also criticised the lack of aggression from the Pies midfield in a whole, unable to turn their ruck dominance into scoreboard pressure.
“If you are going to have so much upside in the ruck then try to create a score, and I don’t think Collingwood tried to create enough scores from a dominant ruckman,” he said.
Last night Mumford had just eight touches while Grundy gathered 25 disposals, 20 contested possessions and 10 clearances, but Mitchell said his game would be rated highly internally.
“I think Mumford would be sore and battered today, but when it comes to their best and fairest night it wouldn’t surprise me if he was one of the highest rated players from the Giants point of view,” Mitchell said.
“I thought his influence on the game was really significant.”

Saying it a second time doesn't make it any less risible. |

Not sure you can discount Sam Mitchell's opinion so lightly. After all, he was a mid who depended on gaining clearances from ruck hitouts. He had, as you said, 329 games of experience in doing so. _________________ Free Julian Assange!!

Hawthorn almost never played with a competent ruckman during Mitchell's tenure. Mitchell wouldn't know what a decent ruckman looked like. |

Maybe a cardboard cut out like Steve McKee could be useful _________________ Don't confuse your current path with your final destination. Just because it's dark and stormy now doesn't meant that you aren't headed for glorious sunshine! |

If we can't profit from / maximise what Brodie does to win finals, why persist?
I'm sick of hearing about how dominant a ruckman he is/was and we get beaten. Fact that Mitchell and Hawthorn did what they've done with no ruck says it all!!!!! And didn't he mastermind taking Sidey out of GF last year?
Listen to what successful winners say and do. If Brodie can't spearhead finals wins, replace him with somebody who can!!!!! _________________ Woodsman |

Need players who get results, that is premierships; not statistical records, historical greatness, Coleman or Brownlow medalists.

Footage just played on "On the Couch" shows Mumford roving to Brodie. He doesn't contest the ruck at all, just grabbing the ball from the tap and getting it forward. This is really interesting, considering that some have expressed that Brody could play as a big mid and rove off Coxy. |

It’s interesting that Grundy got 25 touches, so I wonder who he roved to ?
Mumford gets 8 touches throughout an entire match and they managed to show a couple of them and commentators will want you to believe he had Grundy worked out.
Our mids were poor, it’s that simple. They were totally smothered by the Giants mids and we weren’t allowed to get the ball into space.
Not one of starting mids we’re above their AVERAGE disposal numbers on the day. On the other hand, Grundy was above his AVERAGE in both hit outs and disposals. |

Treloar had 7 kicks in a preliminary final and we're talking about Grundy, who had his hands on the ball, one way or another, 98 times. The focus on Grundy is so stupid that it defies belief.
I should add that they must have looked long and hard for footage of Mumford getting the ball. It is true that he had 8 disposals but only 3 of them were effective. A disposal efficiency of 37.5%, 1 free kick for and 6 against, 7 clangers (I kid you not), 0 marks, no goals, no goal assists and a deficit of 59 in the hitouts. Back him for the Norm Smith with those stats. FFS. |
