Jake Niall is calling on the AFL to scrap the pre-final bye out of fairness because it will assist Collingwood because we have injured/battered players who will benefit from a week's rest.

Funny how it was not a problem beforehand.

Do a simple two minute google search and you'll see this is raised by the football media at this time of year EVERY year...Literally every year. It's almost as regular as mind-numbing claims of persecution and anti-Collingwood bias...

Dude...I did read the article. I then googled "scrap"+"bye"+"grand final" and found similar articles by Rohan Connolly, Kane Cornes, and a whole squadron of other journos arguing the same thing every year since the bye has been in place - the only difference being Collingwood was replaced by whichever other team was on top or was carrying injuries. English comprehension...get on it...

Well, Jake is a Collingwood supporter. (As said above.)

The pre-final bye should be scrapped (from 2024, of course) because it assists the also-rans who finish 5-8. Finishing 1-4 should always be a (huge) advantage. Sometimes it's a disadvantage (only 1 game in a month, etc.).

It helps to mark the passing of the seasons though.

Summer sport is a wasteland with the last test usually being washed out somewhere around the 7th of January. If it wasn't for the annual Australia Day kerfuffle, I'd have to pay attention to the where the grunters and squealers are in the Aussie Open to work out how close we are to pre-season really amping up.

teams 1/2/3/4 should get the finals bye; teams 5/6/7/8 should have to cut each other's throats with two games over that weekend....

If the finals series is over 5 weeks , Maybe top 4 teams get a bye and introduce a final 12 with the the bottom 8 teams of the 12 playing 4 cut throat games to get through to the final 8 teams the following week which reverts to the normal top 8 finals series for the remaining 4 weeks.

This would would mean instead of 9 finals in total there would 13 finals, more money for AFL and no weekend without footy.

If you finish 5-12 you then have to win 4 finals games to make a granny.

Only downside it could create a lopsided grand final if one of the bottom 8 teams make it through but we still get lopsided grand finals any way with current system.

It would be highly unlikely a team could win outside top
4 or even make it through to a granny against well rested top 4 teams.

I don’t like the idea of teams 5-8 playing first week as the winning teams then get a bye the following week when teams 1-4 play and potentially are more rested when they play the 2 losing teams from the top 4 games.

Either that or leave as it is.
