Post subject: 2017 Player expectations | |
|
Thought it may be interesting to put out there what each player is likely to face when it comes to his own and supporter expectations for the year ahead:
1. Alex Fasolo:
* Complete 20+ matches with the consistency shown in first half of 2016
* 40 goals should be target plus improving defensive side of his game
2. Jordan DeGoey:
* 2016 was nowhere as bad as the media, fans and himself made out to be
* that aside a better commitment off-field training and sacrifice
* a 40:60 split between midfield and forward would be a nice progression
* top 10 B&F should be a goal
3. Daniel Wells:
* All fans would take 18 matches in H&A season
* Just continue to the output in performance he exhibited in 2016 with Roos
4. Brodie Grundy:
* If 2016 was a breakout year, then 2017 needs to build on that
* Can emerge as a top 3 Ruck in the league
* really need no injuries with now Witts departed
* 15 goals would be handy
* Another top 4 B&F beckons
5. Jamie Elliott:
* Given an 18 month absence we all would hope for continuity in play
* Patience till 2nd half of season is paramount
* 30+ goals would be more than acceptable
6. Tyson Goldsack:
* Make or break year in what is his last year of contract and turning 30
* Has had more ailments, injuries, strains and pains than Jason Day
* Always admired his tenacity but no longer guaranteed a spot
7. Adam Treloar:
* Sublime debut year in 2016 after severe groin surgery before arrival
* Top 5 in Brownlow with prospects of higher finish realistic
* Big expectations this season with a B&F win and elite league status likely
* Flourishing finishes inside 50 by kick his only weakness
8. Tom Langdon:
* Looking to restore his 2014/15 form after injury plagued 2016
* Has he reached his ceiling? Does he have any versatility outside half back?
* Stiff competition in defence with Ramsay, Scharenberg, Oxley etc...
9. Jessie White:
* Enigmatic at 22 and enigmatic at 29
* Don't emotionally invest and enjoy his wins and blink when poor
* do like the idea of him on a wing
10. Scott Pendlebury:
* Never fit all of last year yet still an admirable output
* Hopefully All Australian again and can lead as boisterously "on field" as he can off field via website"!
11. Jarryd Blair:
* Better get used to plenty of Reserves football
* With no discernible tricks others have passed him by
* if he plays 18+ games it means we won't be final bound
12. Matthew Scharenberg:
* Just play games .... just play games.... just play games
* Would be great to see him play 20+ Senior/Reserves matches
13. Taylor Adams:
* 20-22 games Taylor is what you and supporters want
* No suspensions or silly injuries
* Visible display of on field leadership
* Top 3 B&F very attainable
14. James Aish:
* Take 2nd half of 2016 form into this year
* Instinctive, naturally gifted player with good skills (rare for us)
* keep working on inside game
15. Lynden Dunn:
* Elite kick although at 192cm may struggle against the monsters
* Fans should remember that as a low pick, any upside is a win
16. Chris Mayne:
* Probably the most under pressure recruit for reasons obvious
* Selected for the pure reason of tackling and keeping ball inside 50 which was beyond messrs Cloke, Cox and others in 2016
* 30+ goals shall receive a "Civic Reception in Lulie St come October"
17. Callum Brown:
* With a bout of Glandular fever, 6+ games in second half of 2017 is PAR
18. Travis Varcoe:
* A tad injury affected last season with hamstrings
* would like to see him at Half Back for the whole season plus kick outs
19. Levi Greenwood:
* right on the edge of best 22 and needs to reinvent himself in the Blair role
* 18-20 goals plus an effective defensive forward maybe his lifeline
20. Ben Reid:
* Oh how we pray for his legs daily to stay fit
* Should play CHB all year and only swing forward in "hail mary" times
21. Tom Phillips:
* Elite endurance with prolific ball getting skills
* Maybe a victim of depth or god forbid a "low" injury count
* 12 games would be the most he could hope for in such case
22. Steele Sidebottom:
* time to be bold Nathan and make him a permanent Half Forward
* Please Steele "no more" dinky little grubber kicks to the feet of players
* Could easily be a 40+ goal kicker if given the forum to execute
23. Lachie Keefe:
* lucky to be retained after his 2015 off field faux pas
* Seems like Bucks wants him Forward this year
* Reckon he is in a fight with White and Cox for that forward/ruck role
24. Josh Thomas:
* like Keefe lucky to be retained and time for a loyalty response
* suffers from a "sameness" and no one discernible strength
* being rookie listed shall have to wait for an upgrade
25. Jack Crisp:
* 2 very good years at the club for what was a "steak knives get"
* What is his best spot? Wing, inside mid or a bit of both?
26. Josh Daicos:
* 5 second half season matches would be a good achievement
27. Kayle Kirby:
* love the daring pick here from Hine and hope his X factor is just that
* If he can settle off field hopefully this translates to on field
* would love to see him get off to a great start Preseason to boost his belief
28. Ben Sinclair:
* Much respect to this guy for doing a 180 on his kicking & disposal skills
* Sadly it's a make or break year health wise after 8 years at club.
29. Tim Broomhead:
* like a lot of Pies fans, we all hope he like Scharenberg can deliver in 2017
* Gary Buckenara's article assertion that he was a poor kick would have to go down as the worst piece of "naïve guessing journalism of 2016"!
30. Darcy Moore:
* In boxing terms he is the "Great White Hope"
*35+ goals and 20 matches with no hamstring injuries would be a win
* No ruck work for him Nathan
31. Jackson Ramsay
* A fan favourite for many whom also desires continuity of play
* I worry about his non existent left side and awkward double hand ball drop
* shall compete with many for a half back spot and lacks versatility
32. W.Hoskin Elliott:
* Injury riddled 5 years in the system but displays great X factor
* 25+ goals and 18+ games from a half forward flank would be a win
33. Rupert W.
* Very impressed with his late season impact in the midfield
* a tad quicker than first appreciated
* a better balance of kicks:handballs would be good
* see him and Crisp competing for a similar spot
34. Mitchell McCarthy:
* an excellent Rookie selection whom we're likely to see in Pre Season Cup
35. Sam McLarty:
* Shall get lots of Reserves footy after leg injuries in 2016 in TAC Cup
* Smart selection and hopefully sees some Senior game time in 2017
36. Brayden Sier:
* Bit of pressure on Dekka Hine for Brayden to take some strides ahead 2017
* Has seen more of the Medi care office than green grass in 18 months
* Play play play
37. Brayden Maynard:
* A Bucks favourite and enjoyed his grit till "that kick in against Roos"
* That aside have to remember he is only just turned 20 and has 35 games
38. Jeremy Howe:
* Great pickup last year and was the ultimate sacrificial lamb in defence
* Hopefully with players back from injury we can use him on a wing/forward
* Bucks, lets not turn another X factor player into "vanilla"
39. Ben Crocker:
* Good debut year but suffers a tad from what he can't do vs what he can
* Top mark for height but doesn't get a lot of ball and is a 50:50 kick at goal
* May be playing for his list spot in what looms as a tight year for changes
40. Josh Smith:
* Remarkable debut year in 2016 with him securing a fixed spot in defence
* Lacks a yard or two in pace but finds and distributes the pill excellently
* Hopefully another pre-season can add to his running power
41. Henry Schade:
* Was a former late first round pick from the Gold Coast in 2011
* Insurance policy selection so time shall tell
43. Adam Oxley:
* Disappointing 2016 after the strides gained in 2015
* Believe is contracted until 2018 so may not exactly make/break
* If he can recapture 2015, it may release Howe up field
44. Liam Mackie:
* A year in the Reserves beckons but seems a likely type
45. Max Lynch:
* Top NSW NEAFL Rams Ruck prospect that shall only get senior time if injuries cruel us for the 5th year in a row
46. Mason Cox:
* Not many giants make great forwards
* not many teams play two Rucks anymore
* In a fight with White and Keefe for the Forward/Ruck role
Should be an interesting year and lets just hope injury is not a factor! _________________ I love the Pies, hate Carlscum

All solid observations, but DO NOT want to see either Brown or Daicos take to the field for the seniors in 2017. I'm done with blooding players due to constant injuries; we've fielded enough new players in 2015/2016.
If Brown or Daicos do somehow gain selection in 2017, there is either something VERY WRONG with our trading in the last few years, or injuries having again wrecked us to a standstill. _________________ M I L L A N E 4 2 forever |

Good points. Malthouse had the same view. Remember players like Jason Cloke, Heath Shaw amidst others had full seasons to get their bodies right for Senior combat. Hopefully Nathan has the luxury of such freedom of choice in selection. _________________ I love the Pies, hate Carlscum |

Just pray for an acceptable injury toll to get our answer on Nathan. He just hasn't had a fair shot _________________ I love the Pies, hate Carlscum |

Nice post - well thought out.
FWIW
- 15 games from Wells I would take
- Have talked about White playing on a wing, aka Matt Richardson for 2 years but admittedly I haven't been at many selection meetings!
- Think Josh Thomas gives us some speed (pun intended), especially over 10-15 metres. He is quick for memory.
- Love the idea of Varcoe consistently taking the kick outs. _________________ kymbo |

I'd hope to see at least 2 Pies in the AA team.
I'd expect Treloar and Pendlebury to be our best chances. Call me crazy, but I think Grundy, Fasolo and Adams have the potential to be named in the 40 man squad if they remained fit.
Sidebottom should already have AA honours under his belt by now, but some brain fades might have cost him in previous years. I'd like to see Steele have a 30 goal season. He's a sensational player, but I'd love to see him do a little bit more and finish higher in the B&F _________________ A Goal Saved Is 2 Goals Earned! |

Agree on all
I'd really love to see Steele pop up and really play consistently to his full potential, so much talent.
And yes, great post, love your work _________________ You cant fix stupid, turns out you cant quarantine it either! |

Hope that 2017 does not have the horror run of injuries and also hope that::
The group returning from injuries are completely over those injuries and a full season
Is the result--and not just for 2017 but for seasons that follow
If we are to rise we need to put together a side that if we make the eight this year will continue to be involved in September for several years _________________ I'm not arguing--just explaining why i am right |

Like it. Good stuff. Reckon a pass mark for Tomy Phil is to be on the list in 2018.
40 goals for Elliot is a bit high coming off not playing. Would be happy with 20 and no injuries. _________________ The match day thread is for unfiltered BS knee jerk reactions. The time for level headed comment comes after. |

Had 30+ goals for Jamie Elliott in the post. A tad hard on Tommy Phillips, it's not like he is the new Julian Rowe! _________________ I love the Pies, hate Carlscum |

Some good analysis in here.I still think Levi is definite starter in the 22, he gives us a good amount of niggle and can kick the odd goal. I also hope Ramsay and Langdon come back stronger. _________________ " Ohhh Banksy and out comes the Note Book".

Hard to see Langdon have much impact in first half of season. Hasn't even trained with main group yet and no one seems to be saying much about his current problem |
