What sort of the club environment is our club fostering ? we have all the money in the world and re-sources yet we can't stop 21-year-old kids getting homesick and wanting to return to their home state I don't get it surely we must have mechanisms in place to support these young men and if we do there obviously not working because the last few years we have seen players returning Citing family reasons this is just not good enough in a professional environment , what is going on down there? is it the coaching I don't get it , just don't understand why players retiring at 21 , this shouldn't be happening the whole club needs a total review starting from the president and coach down to the boot studder

Yep.

It's not like any other footballer has ever decided that either the rigors of top level footy are not for them or they want to go home be closer to family.

And you never find anyone in a professional environment anyone deciding that the job isn't for them.

A Lions player has done the same thing, and a Gold Coast player. Everything they do is scrutinised and social media has bozos waiting to pounce on everything said. The Herald Sun has encourages morons to send in footage of players on mad monday. Dane swan gets woken at 6 am in Las Vegas by WADA to give a piss sample. Clubs fined because they don't know where players are 24/7. How many other organisations could get away with this? These are young men who want to go and enjoy things and are effectively put in a bubble. The payoff is the salary and access to glamours I suppose but if you are on the fringe it is hardly worth the effort.
And then we have idiots at one club (that we know of) injecting players with sub stances they can't identify. Put on top the tyranny of distance and the players hearing of mates going on gap years mooching around the world it is no surprise this happens.

Well going on the players already back training I say he's winning.

It says to me the culture is fine, they appear determined to succeed next year.

As for Jonathan we have no idea what is really going on. Reports are he has retired from AFL. We need to remember there are 40 odd individuals on an AFL list. Keeping everyone happy would be impossible.

Let's give the Bulldogs as an example, everyone loves Beveridge apparently but yet 2 players wanted to go home after winning the premiership and it's reported amazing culture. Again AFL and living away from family and friends is not for everyone.

Jonathan isn't the first and won't be the last, it's their job not just turning up on a Friday night or a Sunday afternoon to play footy.

I wish him all the best and hope he gets the help he needs.

def a recent problem with WA players in particular... Hamling, Kersten, McCarthy, Marsh, etc... which looks like smaller town / country kids being a long way from family & struggling to adapt to big city life.

Brodie also broke down at the B&F, so SA kids are not immune either. Lets hope we can remedy this and get around our interstate players, as we've got a lot!

Soft as butter! We live in a world where famous sporting Aussie 20+ year old millennials like:

* Jason Day
* Sally Fitzgibbon
* Casey Stoner

whose exploits involve 11 months overseas each year don't pull the "homesick card" and are hardened for the commitment. Yet in AFL, we have luminaries such as Gary Ablett pulling the "homesick card" amidst 10-20 others every October!!!

Pathetic.

All individual sports where they get to move to the beat of their own drum.
