Day one riding completed.
Left from the MCG at 6.45 on buses
2 suitcases about 10kg in each (the limit required)
Bike boxed. Bikes went into a truck an bags under the bus.
Got to Robe about 2.15pm
Lined up to get allocated packs with Jerseyās, name & numbered tags for luggage and bike and ride guide info
Lined up for tags for the tent and luggage (thereās an option to pay a bit more & they supply a tent and mattress)
Found an erected tent, put luggage in.
Located bike box & assembled the bike along with 1000ās of others
Headed into town and had a breakfast/ lunch at 4pm
Tent sleep was OK
Caught up with people Iād met from previous rides in QLD and elsewhere
About 3-4000 people
Today:
85 km ride mostly flat from Robe to Millicent with a lunchstop in Beachport. Sat having my lunch watching the turquoise like water slowly lap the shore with a huge sea-lion basking in the sun: I can relate to that š _________________ āI even went as far as becoming a Southern Baptist until I realised they didnāt keep āem under long enoughā Kinky Friedman |

Robe, Beachport and Millicent are great places. I did, at one time, fancy having Robe towed much closer to Geelong. |

Day 2 done. Mostly flat and no wind š
About 100kmās, Millicent to Mt Gambier
Woke at 4:50 a after packing my suitcases, taking them to the appropriate truck, rolled up the vinyl mattress supplied & took that to the relevant truck, the bike was lubed & cleaned last night, toilet, cup of tea, brush teeth then away with 2 full water bottles.
I left at 6:08 & was one of the first few out. Beautiful days riding but much of it on my own as most people leave after 7.am. By that stage I was already past the first stop at 28 kmās having a nice black coffee. Lunch was about 65 kmās and they hadnāt fully set up for lunch.
Made a contribution to the local footy / netball club by having a sausage!
Went without other food though and got to Mt Gambier by about 10:45. Campsite wasnāt set up so rode another 8 kmās or so to the town centre and met up with two other riders and had a huge brunch with coffee š
Bike went well
Got back to the campsite and helped unload the bags in a chain line with other riders, had already located a tent.
Because I was early no queues for the showers and able later to do & hang my washing
The above detail is part of village living in this mobile city.
Yesterday I did some basic Yin Yoga with about 30 others.
There are masaages available, food vans, coffee vans, a mobile charging service) got in early & you pre pay. There is live music, marquees, licensed drinking & an over-subscribed bus shuttle service to the town centre.
Now I taking it easy, catching up with acquaintances, reading a book and listening to the cricket. Later Iāll lube the bike ready for tomorrow
Iām in bed (tent) by 8:pm reading & resting
Tomorrow is over 100 kmās to Portland. There is a 50% chance if rain and likely windy š±.
It is what it is: but today and yesterday were great introductions to the rest of the ride _________________ āI even went as far as becoming a Southern Baptist until I realised they didnāt keep āem under long enoughā Kinky Friedman |

Cheers TP.
Tonight at the nightly briefing we were introduced to a woman in her ? late 70ās. This is her 33rd great vic bike ride!
Thereās a liquorice all sorts: fat people, skinny people, old people, young people, volunteers , flash riders, novices, road bikes, commuting bikes, mountain bikes, carbon bikes, e bikes...the lot. Fast riders, slow riders etc. Itās a highly supportive environment.
Lotās of fun. _________________ āI even went as far as becoming a Southern Baptist until I realised they didnāt keep āem under long enoughā Kinky Friedman |

Day 3 done. 110.5 kmās from Mt Gambier to Portland. A long ride, a few hills.
Got up at 4:50, showers arenāt available in the mornings so I get my huge enamel bowl, put cold water in it and add boiling water: thereās boiling water available for tea & coffee from 5:45-10pm. I use this to wash my face & feel fresh for the ride. I donāt eat breakfast but 2 bottles of water and a cup of tea.
I was out by 6:15: not too many gone by then. On the positive side of the ledger thereās little traffic, little wind and you get to see wildlife when ur in the middle if nowhere. Today I saw emus, wallabies and kangaroos.
Beautiful sounds of birds and various forms of flora. There seems to be a lot of self-seeded poppy flowers / plants on the route especially out of Mt Gambier. Very pretty.
Weāre camped along the foreshore. Unfortunately, the stand-up tent section is at least a km from the main marquee area. There are few showers available & despite arriving early I always help out unloading the luggage which quite a few of us do. However when itās time to shower thereās a ridiculously long queue. Further away again is a pier & on the other side of the pier is a beach and a smelly toilet block with external showers. So I went in for a dip in the freezing water with my bike shorts on: not long enough for dealing with lactic acid then as it transpired the outside showers were solar heated š so I could wash & wash by bike shorts while on of course.
Decided to have chinese tonight rather than the pretty average fare served up by the caterers.
I found 2 women riders in the last section & they were motoring: Between the 3 of us we were averaging 33 kmās per hour. When ur on ur own itās a lot harder. Getting onto a train of riders is magnificent. It hasnāt yet happened for me so far. Thatās the downside of going early in that you miss out on the more social aspects at times. Plenty of down time when u finish early to socialise.
Tomorrow is 85 kmās from Portland to Port Fairy for the rest day. _________________ āI even went as far as becoming a Southern Baptist until I realised they didnāt keep āem under long enoughā Kinky Friedman |

I'm so glad you're enjoying this, I'd only do it at gunpoint and probably would have reached the "%$^£$%^&%% it, just shoot me" point well before now _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

Really tough day today, really tough. Portland to Port Fairy.
Rain, hail, sleet, squall like winds, semi trailers going past & wind and wet. The last 20kmās of todays 85 were continual wind gusts of over 50 kmās per hour. F*cking hard.
I rode the last 20 kmās with a woman from Warragul who was slightly built but a great rider.
To make matters worse I didnāt eat till I finished. That was a mistake as I was really hurting all over. My hands and arms were in an involuntary tremor for a few minutes. I quickly downed a banana and the packed chicken caeser salad that was for lunch. I recovered quickly, went into town and had a big breakfast. Came back and helped unload a truck of bags, found a tent and crashed for a couple of hours.
Port Fairy currently is very windy. Tomorrow is a rest day thanks be the lord š _________________ āI even went as far as becoming a Southern Baptist until I realised they didnāt keep āem under long enoughā Kinky Friedman |
