Interesting article.
I wonder how many people can relate to mum using a weapon (wooden spoon, electric cord) to discipline children?

Thugs have been having kids and families since the dawn of time, so nothing new there. What is new is that, for the first time almost, society is taking violence in the family home seriously. I think the next generation will, on average, have much less to worry about than mine did, or yours did. Keep in mind that, despite the alarmist headlines, our society is becoming less and less violent all the time, both inside and outside the home.

Wooden spoon, yes. Five-foot long bamboo stick, yes. Then again, she wasn't the only one.

My mum favoured the jug cord, the electric cord off the kettle. About 4 foot long, braided electrical wire coated with some sort of cloth insulation, double it over, hold the plug ends in one hand and swing at the legs/backside. Stung like buggery.

hey, she didn't use it often. The last time was when i was about 10 and was being an argumentative little bastard and she got frustrated and took a swing. I caught it in my hand (hurt like a mofo), wrenched it off her, reversed the grip and gave her one back.
A few tears and discussions followed but the jug cord was only used for the kettle afterwards.

I don't ever remember being hit at all by either parent
I remember my dad hitting my mum until I reached 14 and had grown to 6 foot tall - then I remember him trying to strangle her and me putting him on his arse - and then he left never to be seen again - no loss!!!

My parents used one of those yellow matchbox car tracks that I had. Remember those? They joined together with little red clips, made loops 'n stuff then let your matchbox cars rip on 'em.

Oh yeah, the nuns.
I'm not catholic but when I was 5 pr 6 mum organised Piano lessons for me off this old (seriously 80+) Nun up at the local catholic school. She was seriously old school, hammering repetition of the basics including how to hold your hands upright with fingers pointed down.
Every time the wrists dropped too low, WHACK with the wooden ruler.
She wasn't a bad old stick, I've still got the silver cross with Jesus on it she gave me somewhere. I only did 6 months with her then after a break got a private teacher.
Another bloke was in grade 6 we got a new principal, and the principle was the grade 5-6 teacher. First day on the job he took a dislike to the kids habit in class of leaning back on the chairs with the feet hooked around the back legs. So he gave one warning, waited 10 minutes, and then did a lap of the room and the first kid he came to leaning back on his chair be booted right in the ankle. You never saw so many kids sit up straight so quick

My older brother had it far worse, he went to the Christian Brothers, and there was all kinds of abuse there. He really hated school.
He once me about getting detention and having to turn up to school on a Saturday with his friend to plant trees.
The Christian Brother explained they had to dig a hole and put a tree in, then went away and left them to it.
When he came back he wanted to know why they put the trees in upside down with the pots sticking upwards.
They explained that they hadn't been told which way to put them in the ground. |
