And another one bites the dust. Rick Parfitt, Status Quo guitarist, died today at 68 from an infection to a shoulder injury after a fall.
I've never been a Quo fan myself, but one can't have been alive these past 50-odd years without hearing Quo riffing away somewhere through quite a slab of your life, one way or another. Next door's parties, cars driving past, supermarkets, random moments of radio: for a very long time, Status Quo has been part of our cultural wallpaper.
They only ever had one song, albeit with different words and sometimes played in different keys or at a slightly different tempo, but it was a good song: simple, catchy, and with a wonderful gritty guitar-based sound. Plenty of better, more famous musicians would sell their granny for that sound, and Rick Parfitt was a very large part of making it. _________________ Let's eat Grandma. Commas save lives! |

Only had one song??
They had over 60 chart hits in the UK, more than any other rock band.

Oh, sure. But they were all the same song.
Hey, there is nothing wrong with only having one song. The great Bo Diddley only had one song. _________________ Let's eat Grandma. Commas save lives! |

I got my sister into Quo rather than listen to her and her silly mates playing the Osmonds, and the insufferable Bay City Rollers. Went to a lot of concerts and fan club meetings. Was simple but great fun. My only regret was that bloody awful Coles ad. _________________ Annoying opposition supporters since 1967. |

Down down another one down....
I did't realise how many songs they had that I knew. |

IIRC, at one stage Quo had the record for most years without a change in lineup. A record that surely belongs to U2 now?
Pictures of Matchstick Men was ripped off holus bolus for Scorpio Rising which featured Liam Gallagher on vocals. Quoasis indeed...
RIP Rick

The former Rick Parfitt ? It's an interesting question.... I suppose he is the same Rick Parfitt, just a lot less mobile than he used to be. _________________ Two more flags before I die! |

IIRC, Francis Rossi resignedly said he needed the money due to having 8 kids to feed [or words to that effect!] Sometimes perhaps you have to prostitute your integrity for the greater good?
Regardless, Whatever You Want and Deeper and Down are two of my fav all time rock songs.
Oh, and also one of my fav all time TV parodies:

Ah, Gareth and Norman, you wags! Gold!
