I don't buy any of it.
There's no excuse for rudeness and arrogance, from coaches, bosses or from anyone else. This article is simply an attempt to excuse pathetic childish behaviour from insecure and not very bright people like Malthouse, who have inflated opinions of themselves.
Whenever I hear about the 'stress' that sports people are under - earning their big salaries - I always recall the answer Keith Miller (Australian fast bowler and batsman in the 40s and 50s) gave when asked how did he handle the pressure of opening for Australia: "Pressure? That aint pressure. Pressure is having a messerschmitt up your arse". He flew Lancaster bombers during WWII. |

I'm going to have to read it again when I'm not tired. I took it as a slap to malthouse (and zero doubt it was about him)not an excuse.
As far as the stress sports people are under, I totally get the Keith Miller argument, but stress and depression are personal and relative. I'd love the stress of being 23 years old, single and earning near $300k pa personally, but then again I've learned a lot more about how to deal with it than I knew then. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

A good article, but it left the big question unanswered - how can a man who is so devoid of charm in public, be "charismatic, personable and empathetic" within a club ? Because he clearly is - that 2010/2011 side showed it. While I enjoyed reading the article, I was disappointed that it did not elucidate that central enigma. And no, he is not every coach ; it's about Malthouse, who is different -better and worse - than most AFL coaches. _________________ Two more flags before I die! |

I thought 2011 showed Malthouse's selfishness, arrogance, petulance and general kuntishness in all it's glory actually.
He played a part in our 2010 win but he played a bigger part in our 2011 loss imo. If the rumours are correct his attitude towards one of his assistants that year (take a wild guess which one) was childish and unprofessional but typical of the supreme narcissistic.I wonder what that did for morale around the place.
His attitude to press, fans and his own players after a loss is just pathetic (just ask Jason Cloke, Chris Tarrant and Dane Swan) and I long for the day a journalist finally grows a pair and stands up to the grumpy prick in a post game press conference and says "you don't like my question? Well I don't like your answer, stick it up your arse you $£$%^%%$ has been".
I'm glad were rid of him. |
