Pretty sure there are at least 2 versions of a star is born. |
Four, in fact!
Speaking of films with a large number of adaptations, I took Ingmar to the Astor to see Guillermo del Toro's stop-motion version of Pinocchio, which moves the story to fascist Italy during World War II. Pretty impressed by it for the most part – particularly in its central focus on mortality, which I think is a subject more children's films should be willing to confront – though I can't say I'm as enthusiastic about del Toro's penchant for violence and distinctively Disney sensibility when it comes to representation of heroes and villains. (I strongly suspect that his passion for dispatching moustache-twirling bad guys informs the historical setting, and not the other way around.) The film is also a musical, which is ... a choice, I guess.
One thing I did like about it is the design of the title character, who (unlike in the Disney animation and its recent remake) really doesn't look human in any recognisable way. And the opening sequence, in which Geppetto's ten-year-old son is killed in an air strike after a short prologue developing their relationship, is genuinely moving. The film would be way too frightening and violent for very young kids, but I think it's excellent for ages 7/8 or older. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967)
Stars: Spencer Tracy, Katherine Hepburn, Sidney Poitier.
Director: Stanley Kramer
What a gem.
In the scene near the end where Spencer Tracy gives his memorable soliloquy, Katharine Hepburn can be seen crying in the background. This was not acting: she knew how gravely ill her longtime friend was and was moved by his remarks about how true love endures through the years.
The film's last scene was Spencer Tracy's last scene ever filmed. It took a week to shoot the scene, and at the end, he was given a standing ovation by the crew. He died seventeen days after filming was completed.
Lauries rating over 4 quarters ~ two of the games legends at the top of their craft, put on a clinic. I give it 8 goals 2 behinds. (maximum 10 goals) _________________ "The Club's not Jock, Ted and Gerry" (& Eddie)

Righteous Kill (2008)
Stars : Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Carla Gugino
Director: Jon Avnet
Even the teaming of heavyweights De Niro & Pacino couldn't save this genre numbing script. It was like sitting through the Geelong / Sydney GF again, everyone hoped for a classic, but were kept waiting for the action to start.
If you are hoping for more of the same dynacism delivered between these two in Heat (1995), and expecting something close to the Street shoot-out scene from the very movie to unfold, well spoiler alert ~ you'll be left drudging through 90 minutes and asking yourself have these veterans played one season too many?
Lauries rating over 4 quarters ~ despite having two of the games legends, they failed to impact. I give it 3 goals 7 behinds. (maximum 10 goals) _________________ "The Club's not Jock, Ted and Gerry" (& Eddie)

The Big Short.
Finally caught up and watched this the other night and it's really good.
For anyone who is after some clarity around the 2008 financial collapse, or just someone wanting to watch a good film, this is a great option (even for those of you with questionable taste ) _________________ kill for collingwood! |
